Android Auto – Pocketcasts treats “unmute” differently to other audio apps

Hi there, I noticed in my Mazda CX-30 using Android Auto that PocketCasts treats the unmute command differently than other audio apps.
It seems if I mute then unmute it will pause then resume. But if I wait a bit and then unmute, it will ignore the unmute request. There is no way to get the podcast going again from the car media buttons, I have to hit play in the Android Auto UI.
This is different to how both Google Podcasts and Spotify handle the same button. Where unmute maybe 5 mins after muting will resume what I was listening to.
A use case for this would be navigating some busy intersections where I want to pause the show to focus, and then unpause the show when I’m back crusing.

Hello, I know this is an old thread but I just got a new car and I’m finding exactly the same issue. My car is an MG4. If I’m listening to PocketCasts and I pause using the steering wheel button and immediately resume then it works fine. But if I pause for more than about five seconds then pressing the button will not resume playback. Also, forward and back buttons won’t work. BUT I can resume pressing by tapping the play icon on the screen. Also, saying “OK Google, resume playback” will resume playback.
As the OP said, other apps such as Spotify and Tidal can be resumed after any amount of time using the steering wheel button.
I thought it might be the Intelligent Playback Resumption as that seems to cut in after being paused for a little while but I disabled this and the problem still occurs.
Please help… PocketCasts is my most used app and it’d be great if it worked properly with my car.
