App freezes and won’t stop playing
-
I use this app daily. For the last several days, when using the app in my car, it breaks. The app freezes, continue playing and nothing I do on my phone stops it. I can’t force close it. It plays over other apps and the only way to stop it is to restart my phone. Then when I open the app again, it doesn’t keep track of all the playing it did. My app is up to date too.

Hi, @bmeghan1520! To help us look into this further, can you please share the following details with us?
- The OS of your device – are you on Android or iOS?
- If you’re on Android, are you using Android Auto?
- If you’re on iOS, are you using CarPlay?
- The OS version on your device – you can usually find this from your phone’s Settings
- Your Pocket Casts app version – you can see this from the Pocket Casts app’s Profile > Settings (gear icon) > About

I have the same problem, app becomes unresponsive. My problem has nothing to do with car-use though, I think the most recent update broke the app for me.
Phone is Realme X2 Pro, Android 11
Pocket Casts 7.46 (9135).

Hi, folks ( @bmeghan1520, @mathiasaxberg, @willfletcherny)! Since you’re all on Android, I suspect that you’re running into the freezing issues we’ve been having on 7.46.
We’ve started rolling out 7.46.2, which contains fixes for these issues, so please update to that as soon as it’s available for your device here. Of course, if issues persist after the updates, do let us know!

this is happening to me as well – App keeps freezing, blank screen and just not working. Android user. For the past week. So frustrating – hope you fix the bugs and release a new update soon or I’ll have to get my podcast fix elsewhere 😔

My phone is a Samsung A53, model SM-A536W. Android version 13. One UI version 5.1.
I have recently been updated from 7.46.1 to 7.46.2. The problems that I had with 7.46 have returned. They include the freezing cited above. I attempt to stop the podcast, and it will resume.
Other issues include: podcasts not auto-downloading; manual reorder of podcasts does not stay; cannot manually download the podcasts; when I tap a podcast to select to play, the podcast show list is blank.
I just did a Forced Stop. So far the app is behaving, including playing a title. But this is not my first Forced Stop. I dunno.
The only thing that I did different was a change of playback speed, from 1.2 to 1. I have put it back up, but it is now not misbehaving. Again, I dunno. Ugh.
-
These problems have also persisted on my device with version 7.46.2. I have had to uninstall and reinstall the app a few times just to get it back into a functional state.
Phone model: Motorola G Power (2021)

Same issue here for me, using 7.46.2. The app freezes, or screens become empty ( i.e. all podcasts disappear, the filter screen is empty and similar). This has been an issue for close to 2 weeks, not really changed after the 7.46.2 update.
Phone: Samsung S21 5G
Android version: 13 / One UI version: 5.1

Problems have persisted into Pocket Casts 7.46.2 for latest Android 13 on Pixel 7a.
App won’t start three times out of four, freezing on launch screen. Phone restart usually fixes it. App freezes and unresponsive when open at least once per day, requiring restart (with the risk it won’t restart requiring a phone restart).
Thank you for your work to fix it, I use this app incessantly :)
App: 7.46.2

Same. 7.46.2 on Android 13 on Pixel 6 pro.
If the podcasts screen even loads, the actual podcast episodes will display a blank/black screen. I can’t even get a podcast to start. Persists after clearing cache or restarting phone. Unusable app at this point.

The Android app broke completely a bit more than a week ago (with the 7.46 update, I guess). I couldn’t stop, fast forward or Mark as Read the episode that was playing. And when it ended I got nothing more, and the app left me back at the same place in the same podcast episode. I tried force closing, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. No joy.
Now, with v. 7.46.2 things seem to be even worse. It hasn’t quite managed to freeze the phone, but it seemed to try quite hard to do so!
I am a (very) long-time user with a lifetime subscription, and I never saw anything like this. What’s going on? And, more important, when will you fix it?

Same issues as all the other posts. Freezing, hanging, not responding, continuous playing, having to force quite app multiple times (sometimes multiple times in a row before i can get it to respond again).
Running latest 7.46.2
Pixel 4a (5G). – yes I know i’m a luddite
Android version 13, Build # TQ3A.230805.001

Same issue, now on 7.46.2, OnePlus 7 Pro – I even updated to Android 12 because I thought maybe my avoidance of Android 11 was the issue.
Nope. I’d add this is so bad that I’ve restarted my phone multiple times to deal with it – three times because I couldn’t make the phone stop playing without restarting.
When it’s not refusing to stop playing, it often won’t react at all. Functions normally once in a while, but leaving and coming back often puts it into unreactive mode.

Pocketcasts support had me turn off “analytics” under the privacy menu. That seems to have fixed things for now – the app is finally doing what it is supposed to do. Might be worth trying for others.
-
Thanks for the tip. I tried turning off analytics and no dice. Still getting same behaviors within 2 minutes for me. I’m glad it is working for you.
-
I’ve tried turning off analytics (all BTW including crash reports) – still testing, it didn’t have any effect at first but seems to be more stable after a restart of my phone. YMMV.
-
Mine is doing “ok” no where near as bad after restart and clearing the cache multiple times. We’ll see how it goes when I’m on travel when I listen to podcasts heavily.
-
I also turned off analytics and crash reporting, cleared the app cache and restarted my phone.
Clearing the cache at least moved me on to a new podcast episode, but still with all of the same problems – unable to pause, unable to Mark as Played, unable to play a different episode, etc. Interestingly, the episode keeps playing to the end even if I force close the app.
I guess if we all turn off analytics and crash reporting, they’ll be able to tell the bosses that ‘the situation appears to be improving’, haha. Couldn’t we have a rollback to the version before 7.46?

This is happening to me as well. I’ve tried all the solutions above, and it’s still broken. I have a couple of other symptoms. In addition to the app freezing (no inputs work – pause, rewind, jump ahead, etc.) but playback continuing, I also sometimes get a blank screen when I go to the “Podcasts” section of the app, and if I am able to see my podcast tiles when I click on one the entire area is blank. Everything worked great until around a week ago for me, but the app has become almost completely unusable since then.
I’m on:
Pocket Casts – 7.46.2
Samsung S20 FE
Android Version 13
