Archive does not delete download

Unsure if I changed a setting that I now cannot find, but when I manually archive a podcast it does not delete the download. It used to do that. Now I have to also manually delete the download. Any ideas? Thanks.

Rant: I hate the term “archive”, just make it “delete”. I am not archiving it for future use, I am deleting it as I don’t want to listen to it.

  • Hi @uniqueprince90d8562dcb,

Archiving an episode automatically removes its downloaded file. So, you can set Auto Archive settings according to the following guide: How To Automatically Archive Episodes.

With Auto Archive, episodes will be automatically archived according to your settings. Any downloaded files associated with the episodes will also be deleted in the process.

I hope that helps! Let us know if you have any other questions.

I’ve read those. What I am saying is that when I swipe to archive an episode in my Up Next, it does NOT remove the download. It used to do that.

Forgot to mention: iPhone 14 Pro, latest version of PocketCasts downloaded today

  • @uniqueprince90d8562dcb I just tested version 7.69 of the iOS app and archiving is still removing the downloaded file as expected on my device.

In your case, what are you seeing that indicates the downloaded file hasn’t been deleted? For example, are you still seeing the episode in Profile > Downloads? After archiving an episode, do you continue to see a green check mark on it that signifies it’s still downloaded?

Yes, it still shows in Profile > Downloads. I can manually re-archive it from there but I recently found a bunch that were still there after I’ve archived them in my Up Next queue.

I also have version 7.69. I have a bunch of downloads right now and don’t want to uninstall/reinstall at this point. Will try after I’ve gotten the list shorter.

Edit: So, this is interesting: If I go to Up Next and swipe to archive, it keeps the download and also the green check mark in the Podcast page. However, if I do Select (top right while in Up Next) and choose the podcast, hit the three dots and choose Archive it does delete the download and hides it from the Podcast page.

Maybe swiping to archive in Up Next has changed in a recent update and it’s now just “remove from Up Next”? But that’s how I’ve always done archiving in the past.

@uniqueprince90d8562dcb From what you describe, you’re using “Remove from Up Next” when swiping left on an episode. That’s indicated by the icon that looks like three lines with an “x.” This has been the default behavior of the app for a long time.

In your case, I wonder if what you experienced before was Auto Archiving of an inactive episode (one that hasn’t been played, downloaded, or unarchived). Can you check which Auto Archive settings you have under Profile > Settings (gear icon) > Auto Archive? Usually, how soon after swiping left on an episode in the Up Next queue did you check whether its downloaded file had been removed?

    My AutoArchive settings:
    Played Episodes – After Playing
    Inactive Episodes – Never

    Maybe I changed that, dunno.

The icon is three lines with an x, so I guess I have been doing that and inactive was on? Currently, the download file just stays there.

To be honest, I have no idea why you have “archive” instead of “delete”. I am not archiving anything (i.e. saving for later). I want to delete the episode since I don’t want to listent to it, ever. So confusing and you’re the only one that does that.

This all started when I subscribed to a new podcast, it auto downloads and adds to the end of Up Next (which is what I want). But then I went through and saw that I didn’t care about some of them and swiped to what I thought was delete, but it just removed from Up Next. Unless I hit the Select button and then archive it from there. Not very intutitive and your help pages did not describe how to do that at all.

A simple swipe option to change from “Remove from Up Next” to “Delete” would suffice. But you don’t let us change the swipe options.

Anyway, thanks for explaining and I guess you can close this now.

  • @uniqueprince90d8562dcb thanks for sharing this information with us!

Based on what you’ve shared, I understand what is happening here. When you remove episodes from your Up Next queue, that does not archive the episode in case you ever wanted to add it back in the future.

Your feedback has been noted and if we get more requests to adjust how this work, it will certainly be looked into sooner.

I completely agree with you. “Archive” ist not the thing I associate with. You delete the download. Archive would mean that I put it in a place fot he futute and I can still hear the downloaded file (even it is not available any more on the podcast.

    I support the idea.

  • @pandorra1975 thank you for your feedback on this! I’ll be sure your comments are added to the associated feature request.

I agree with @uniqueprince90d8562dcb. I too wonder why you use “archive” when “delete” says exactly what the function does, or at least is supposed to do.

  • Hi there, @tcuzzillo! Thanks for your feedback about the terminology used to describe removing episodes. I have shared this with the team.
