Auto-play on Bluetooth connection
-
I recently switched from FM Player and while Pocket Casts is superior in many ways, one feature I miss is for podcasts to automatically start playing when I switch on my Bluetooth speaker or ear buds. Now after switching on the speaker, I have to go to Pocket Casts and press Play.

Hello @nlvarley,
Great suggestion! I’d be happy to forward this over to the team for consideration.
-
Conversely, I would like Pocket Casts to not auto-resume when I connect my Bluetooth earbuds. (I feel this must be a device-specific setting because my previous earbuds did not auto-resume, but my new ones do. However, I can find no such option in either of their configuration apps.)
-
That’s interesting. FM Player has an option in the settings to resume playing upon Bluetooth connection that seems to override any device-specific setting, but Pocket Casts has no option for this.

Much like the original poster, I have the same issue. When I get in the car (or when I connect my bluetooth earbuds), it automatically plays from the Apple Music app even though 95% of the time I’d prefer it to automatically play Pocket Casts. Is there any way to set it so it plays Pocket casts automatically?

@serossfaee7828c5 So far, the solution I can see for iOS is to create a shortcut, as described here and here. Can you see if that works for you?

Like skst, I wish that I could prevent Pocket Casts from auto-playing when I turn on my car, which my phone auto-connects to via Bluetooth (and not Android Auto, fwiw). It seems from Reddit forums that Youtube Music has this feature, possibly among others, but I can’t find such a thing in Pocket Casts. I’d appreciate any pointers, though!

@nathanritterbac8dffe8c Unfortunately, we don’t have direct control over this behavior as it’s often influenced by your phone’s settings or the specific capabilities of your car’s Bluetooth system.
While we don’t have a built-in feature to prevent auto-play in this scenario, we’ve added your suggestion to our feature request list. This will help our developers prioritize this feature for future updates.
In the meantime, you might want to explore the following:
- Check your phone’s settings to see if there’s an option to disable auto-play for media apps when connected to Bluetooth.
- Some cars have settings that control media playback behavior. Consult your car’s manual for specific instructions.
-
Sorry to say, but the app creator does have control over this behaviour, and not the phone. There is an example in stackoverflow.com that exactly shows how to accomplish this. Please implement!

@vandernietm thank you for sharing this! I’ll be sure to include this in the feature request and let our developers know as well!
