Bug Report + Solution: Failed Downloads After Transfer To New Phone
-
1. Transfer phone from Galaxy S20 to S24+.
2. Podcasts appears setup and proceed to use for 2 weeks
Actual Results:
Data usage higher by 2gb due to bug in Pocket Casts forcing download of mobile data
Expected Results:
Downloads should have continued to work after transferring from an old phone.
Fix:
The problem was that the old phone’s storage location was SD Storage, and this setting was transferred to the new phone. Hence, all automatic downloads over WiFi failed.
On startup, add a validate(settings) and check for a storage location which does not exist on the current phone.

Hi, @codinglifestyle! Can you let us know more about how you transferred your Pocket Casts data over to the new phone? Did you use an app like Smart Switch?
Our recommended way of moving Pocket Casts over to a new phone is with Pocket Casts sync. That does not sync downloaded episodes, however, as those are stored locally on a device.

Good point, yes it was with Samsung’s Smart Switch.
The main point is at start up to validate the config and check for storage locations which don’t exist. The same could be true if someone removed their SD card. The app could easily be smart enough to detect the problem and rectify it.

@codinglifestyle thanks for confirming. We have a bug report open for this here: https://github.com/Automattic/pocket-casts-android/issues/808
We hope to have this fixed up in a future update :)
Pocket Casts mobile apps are open-source, so even a member of our community can work on a fix for this
