Cannot cast to google home speakers

Casting works fine with other apps (eg spotify) so this is not an issue with the phone, speaker, network. I have checked that the app is up to date. I have also tried multiple google speakers and the issue is duplicated. I have also tried casting to an Apple speaker which works. So this seems to be a pocketcasts-to-google home issue.
