Chromecast controls disabled.
-
When I cast to my chromecast built-in radio the the controls shown on the Pocket Casts app become disabled after about a minute while the radio continues playing the podcast. I can reconnect by hitting the chromecast icon or finding the chromecast menu item. This used to work and stay connected until the end of the podcast, so something changed recently. Is this problem understood and will a fix be forthcoming? Or can I do something that brings back the old behavior?

Can you tell us the following?
- What version of the app are you using?
- What device are you using?
- What is the Android version of your device?
In addition, are you seeing the same issue with other apps on the same device you’re using Pocket Casts with?

Version 7.70 (9260)
Device: Lenovo TB-8506F otherwise known as the M8
Android 11.
I have other devices with differing Android versions (Lenovo P11 Pro, Samsung S6 lite, ..) and have seen similar behavior at times. The recent upswing though has only been noted on the M8, but I will work with the P11 Pro today and will let you know if the behavior is any different. Previously the most well behaved with Pocket Casts was the M8.
I haven’t been casting with other apps of late, but I do have audials play installed and can give that a whirl if you would like.

I did some testing. Mark Simone podcast, Hour 1 of 8/29/24, roughly 32 minutes in length.
With Audials Play it played properly for about 20 minutes when casting to the radio dropped and it continued only on the tablet. The controls were intact for the 20 minutes.
With Pocket Casts it played for 3 minutes and 10 seconds when the controls went out by pausing the podcast on the tablet while it continued normally on the radio. At this point if I hit the casting icon it will reconnect with the radio, update the controls and continue without interruption on the radio.

Can you try updating your device to Android 14? Also, please make sure Chromecast is up-to-date.
Additionally, have you tried using the P11 Pro?

The M8 is stuck on Android 11 and won’t go any further. The P11 Pro is on Android 13 and just got the July update. I think the S6 Lite is also on 13, thought I’ll check that soon, because it might be on 14. The Chromecast behavior has been pretty much the same on all devices. The radio is a Grace Digital Mondo and updates automatically. I think it still receives updates.
At one point I thought clearing the memory helped and I have continued to do so before starting Pocket Casts. I don’t think it really helps, but it’s a clear starting point if you want to try to reproduce the problem.
Using mostly the P11 Pro the last couple of days I continue to see the problem roughly in the first hour or so. The problem is always there when starting out. However if it’s a long listening session with multiple podcasts the problem disappears and the controls stay in contact with the radio as they should. I’ve seen this a few times now, enough to believe this is always the case. I don’t have a measured time for when the transition to proper behavior occurs.

@loudlycycleb425de2ae6 can you please let us know what you are casting to?
Also, can you check if this happens if you cast audio from another app like YouTube?
Generally, casting issues would be out of our control, but if you find this to be Pocket Casts specific, we can try investigating a bit further
