Chromecast: playback stops at the end of each episode
-
Hello Team Pocket Casts
I love your app and use it everyday!
Something has been broken for months if not more: when listening to a podcast via chromecast (google mini 2, chromecast audio) the playback stops at the end of each episode instead of playing the following episode in the queue.
This is particularly annoying when cooking, having to launch each episode with dirty hands…
I hope you can address this soon
Keep smashing it!

Thanks for reporting this to us. Can you please confirm with us what device you are using to cast the device from (e.g iPhone 13, MacBook, etc)?
Additionally, can you confirm if your Up Next queue contains many episodes?

Hi Joey
I use an iPhone 13 on iOS 16.6
My Up Next queue typically has between 10 and 30 episodes -
This has been happening forever, I reported it years ago, you folks confirmed it, and just responded with “well, we’re doing it how it’s supposed to be done” and moved on. It’s definitely frustrating, I’ve just gotten used to using BT to my devices in room and only rarely cast to all the GHome devices in my home. It is annoying though that this feature is barely functional (which is one of the primary reasons I actually chose Pocket Casts when I first migrated to it).

Hi, @discobole6894549d29 and @f449d2b01966c6d!
Just a bit of background here, our Chromecast integration currently works by sending your Chromecast device a URL to play. Once the URL is sent, the device can stream it, even if you aren’t in the room. Unfortunately, if you go to another app or lock your phone, Pocket Casts is unable to track your progress, which also affects playing your Up Next queue.
This is an issue we’re aware of. However, it will most likely have to be fixed by Google in the Google Cast SDK they provide to developers. We have raised the issue with them, and when an update is available, we’ll include it in our app.
In the meantime, a workaround would be to enable your Pocket Casts app’s “Keep Screen Awake” setting under Profile > Settings icon > General. I know this is probably not very ideal, but I hope it gives you something to consider!

Thanks Cara
I’ve changed the setting and the hack works
I hope Google do fix it for good soon
Keep rocking it! -

Have there been any updates on this issue? I cast to a Google Home when I go to bed and it’s frustrating when the next episode in my Up Next queue doesn’t start, or when my GH continues playing an episode that Pocket Casts is no longer linked/synced with due to this hiccup.
Given that this is while I’m trying to fall asleep, I didn’t think that keeping the screen awake is a viable option for me.

Thanks for checking in @jenllip
We’re currently working on upgrading our Google Cast SDK library, hoping it might be a solution in this case. However, we still have some tests to conduct to ensure everything functions correctly and no other aspects are negatively impacted. We keep you posted if we have any updates on this. Thanks for your understanding!

We have made some improvements to the Pocket Casts integration, which will be in version 7.76. Hopefully, this helps. If you aren’t in the open beta, would you mind joining and trying these changes out? The beta release will start on Monday, October 28th.
Thanks again for letting us know about these issues.

You can join the beta in the Google Play store. If you open the Pocket Casts page and scroll down, there should be a section to join. The 7.76 beta will be released early this week.
Thanks for helping us.
