Custom Scheduling for Auto Add to Up Next
-
Your “Auto Add to Up Next” feature works great and it is truly the main reason I use your app above all others. However, it fails completely for a huge segment of podcasts and workflows: Podcasts with a huge backlog and/or podcasts that have finished airing entirely. The problem is that Auto Add to Up Next only works on new releases, and it can be tedious to add Podcasts like these to Up Next. I often, forget to add them at all and then will never get to them!
The current flow is choosing the old episode that I want to listen to and moving it to the spot in my queue that I want it to play. If I want to add multiple episodes to the queue, I can do that in bulk the same way. But then if I don’t want to listen to this big block of episodes all at once, I have to manually move them to different spots in my queue which can be very tedious and slow. And man, I would love a fully automated queue.
What I am proposing would be a simple(?) re-flavor of the existing Auto Add to Up Next feature that works alongside it.
The idea is that users can set-up a “custom release schedule” for any podcast that automatically puts episodes from that podcast into your queue at a frequency/time that the user specifies.
The new options could live inside the per-podcast settings within the existing Auto Add to Up Next feature. Could be named “Custom Release” or “Scheduled Release”, something like that, for each feed. The default would be that “New Releases” are added to the queue, top or bottom.
- The user chooses where to start Auto Adding from. Whether it will auto add episodes from the feed’s beginning, or end, or a starting from a specific episode.
- The user chooses the order it adds episodes: Newest to Oldest order, Oldest to Newest order, or even Randomly for variety shows!
- The user chooses when is adds episodes: The user sets how frequently/at what time/days of the week they want the app to add an episode from this feed to their Up Next. Additional triggers could exist like “when an episode of this feed is completed.”
- The user chooses where in the Up Next queue the added episodes go: Top or Bottom, or maybe a random option!
- This entire workflow also assumes that archived/played episodes are skipped over, but that could be its own toggle too!
You can imagine too how someone might want multiple schedules for the same podcast, allowing them to keep up with the newest episodes of a feed while also going through the feed’s backlog: all automated in an easy-to-understand way that many people already use!
Here are some threads that touch on the same thing, but might not have as much detail:

This would be great!
I’m following a yearly reading plan and would like to shift it by a month. Right now, there’s no way to automate this and your suggestion would be perfect!

I would love that feature as well! I listen to about 30 different podcasts, and many of them have been around for a while and have a huge backlog of episodes that I have not listened to yet. As a result, I have to manually add them to my queu one by one every time I have listened to a round of episodes. It would be great if this process was automated!
