Deleted downloads re-downloaded automatically

I deleted a large batch of downloaded episodes to free up storage. The deletions took effect immediately, and storage looked good. Within an hour, most or all of the space was consumed again.
It appears Pocketcasts is automatically re-downloading the episodes I just deleted. I have not changed any download settings between the deletion and the refill.
Is there a setting that controls this behavior, or a known workaround?
