Due to network restrictions, the podcast images on the podcast and filters page of Pocket Casts gradually disappear every few days. Over time, all podcast images may even be lost, resulting in an unsightly appearance.
Refreshing all images requires using a VPN to bypass network restrictions, but after 2-3 days, the issue of missing images reoccurs.andriod 14.

Hi! That’s strange. Can you tell us more about the internet connection you’re using?
Also, have you tried using a different internet connection? For example, if you’re on WiFi, switch to Data.

The last feedback and today’s screenshots show that many images have missed.
I’m in China, accessing Pocket Casts’ servers, and encountering some hindrances, whether on data or Wi-Fi. However, I think that shouldn’t be the reason for the disappearance of the images.

We suspects that the issue happens as Pocket Casts tries to refresh the thumbnails for updates. Since there is a network restriction, the servers can’t be reached and the thumbnails can’t be refreshed.
Since the issue is caused by an environment factor such as network restriction, there isn’t anything we could do from our end besides advising alternatives such as using a VPN or network that does not have issues connecting with our servers.

I acknowledge that network restrictions can cause thumbnail refresh issues. However, the main problem is that existing thumbnails automatically disappear after a few days.
For example, when I refresh the thumbnails using a VPN, the next day some thumbnails start disappearing one by one. This forces me to open the VPN again, just to retrieve the thumbnails that were originally present but are now missing. -

As mentioned earlier, we think the missing images might be due to Pocket Casts trying to refresh the thumbnails for updates. This process happens automatically and periodically. If your network was restricted while this auto-refresh was happening, it could explain why the images didn’t show up – they simply couldn’t be retrieved.
Do you have a problem keeping your VPN active all the time or for longer/extended periods?

My guess is the same.
Suggestion: Can we change the logic for refreshing thumbnails? First refresh the thumbnail, check if a new thumbnail has been obtained, and then replace the old thumbnail with the newly obtained one. Instead of deleting the original thumbnail first and then retrieving the new one. This way, even if there are network restrictions preventing the retrieval of thumbnails, the existing thumbnails can still be displayed normally, which usually doesn’t cause any problems.
Alternatively, we could add a switch in the settings page to enable/disable the automatic refresh of thumbnails. -
