Episode Art for all shows

With the upcoming changes to Apple Podcasts in IOS 17 I noted that “Apple Podcasts will support episode artwork for all shows. Listeners can learn more about the subject of each episode with an original illustration, graphic, or photograph, which is displayed on the new Now Playing screen and Queue; the Lock Screen and Control Center; within Up Next in Listen Now; on show and episode pages; and through link previews in other apps, including Messages, Mail, and on social media platforms. Creators should keep these areas in mind when designing episode artwork for shows.

Creators will publish episode artwork via RSS using their hosting provider. Episode artwork is encouraged for creators submitting requests to be featured on Apple Podcasts. When episode artwork is not supplied, Apple Podcasts will continue to display show artwork. Apple Podcasts will also default to show artwork when multiple shows are presented together. To further enrich the listening experience, creators can continue to add chapter-specific artwork, which is displayed in real time as listeners progress through an episode.”

I listen to 2 Blokes Talking Tech, Techguide, EFTM Podcast, 2 Blokes Private Feed and The Best Movies you’ve never seen. They’re all from Trevor Long & Stephen Fenech. Yet, they currently all have the same artwork. I asked Trevor Long if Pocket Casts were working on this but he didn’t know.

  • Hi, @tardis3! While we support per-episode artwork, it’s quite limited currently. Right now, we only support artwork that’s embedded into the episode files themselves. For that to work, you’ll want to enable the “Use embedded podcast artwork” setting under Profile > Settings > Appearance.

We don’t yet support per-episode artwork that’s specified in feeds, but we are tracking demand for it. I’ve made sure to add your comments to our report.

In the case of “Two Blokes Talking Tech” at least, I see that their per-episode artwork is only specified in feeds, so that won’t show up in Pocket Casts just yet.

I want to +1 the ability to use per-episode artwork also that is not embedded.

  • Pocket Casts does support displaying artwork for individual episodes that’s embedded in the downloaded file. You can enable this feature in the mobile app by navigating to Profile > Settings > Appearance and enabling the option near the bottom.

But if you’re referring to a different method of adding artwork, that isn’t embedded in the downloaded file, could you let us know what standard/method would be used for this? I can forward that along to our developers as a feature request.

    Specifically, as referred to above.

“Episode artwork is encouraged for creators submitting requests to be featured on Apple Podcasts.

Looking for support per-episode artwork that’s specified in feeds

  • Thank you for the clarification.

I’ve gone ahead and forwarded this along to our team as a feature request. I can’t offer an estimated timeframe or confirm that it will be added, but hopefully our developers will consider it soon!
