Episodes ending early: bug?

  • Unknown's avatar

The last couple of episodes I listen to have ended 5-10 min early. Haven’t changed any settings in the app but I regularly listen at 1.4× speed. I have retried one of these eps and it still cut off at the same time and said 0:00 remaining. This has never happened before and I’ve listened to this channela lot. I’d appreciate any tips or is this a bug?

  • Hi, @keelywhite4! Can you please share the following information with us so we can start looking into this?

    • The OS version on your device – you can usually find this from your phone’s Settings
    • Your Pocket Casts app version – you can see this from the Pocket Casts app’s Profile > Settings (gear icon) > About

In addition, if you can share one of the episodes you have experienced this issue with, that would be much appreciated. From a podcast’s page, you can click on the episode to expand its details, then click on the Share icon in the upper-right corner of the screen.

In the meantime, please also check if you might have any Skip Last settings for the podcast. You’ll find that by heading to the podcast’s page in the app and clicking on the settings icon next to the green checkmark icon. If you do have anything in the “Skip last” settings, please change it to 0.

I am experiencing this as well. I’m on Android 14 and using Pocketcasts 7.66. The episode I was listening to when this happened is https://pca.st/20dvkf0m. My Skip Last is set to 0 seconds.

  • @mirandanero thanks for letting us know. Are you able to consistently replicate the issue? Also, does it only occur with a specific podcast, or multiple?

In the meantime, I would be interested to know if downloading the episodes from the affected podcasts helps

Did this problem get solved. It happened again to me a few days ago. About 20 mins into an hour long podcast, the podcast stops, is marked as played, and my next podcast in the queue begins. I then have to stop the playing podcast, find the podcast that was erroneously marked Played and restart it. Skipping to where it left off. I have Android on a Motorola Moto stylus phone. The app is not in the foreground so I am not accidentally pressing Mark Played. Thanks for any updates on this

  • Hi @krissdavis1

We did make a lot of improvements to the way we handle skipping in episodes, so you might want to confirm if you’re on v7.77.1.

If you are, and the issue persists, please let us know:

    • Does it happen with just one specific podcast, or all of them
    • Are you streaming or listening to a downloaded version of the file?

I was having this error as well until yesterday. I’m on android, and 7.77.1. It was happening specifically with episodes of My Brother, My Brother, and Me; I don’t know if it would happen with other podcasts, because none of my others have updated since it started. I stream episodes, not download.

Starting yesterday, each episode i play has started instead approximately tripling in length; they’re about an hour, but now it’s showing about 3 hours. If I pause and resume playback, it jumps very far back in the audio when it resumes, then the length shows as 3 hours. Scanning through the additional time shows that the episode repeats at some point during this duration. I just verified with the episode I’m listening to now that it did display the correct duration before I started it.

  • @sophiamanion Thanks for that detail.

Can you also confirm if you’re streaming these over wifi or on cellular?

    How’s the connection of either?

  • Unknown's avatar

@staff-reid I believe it’s happening over both, but am only positive that it’s happening over wi-fi. Both connections are strong.

This is happening to me, on all of the podcasts I’ve tried so far. Only on Chrome/Desktop, Android seems to be fine. Kind of annoying, but it seems to end about 10-25% early before the podcast is done.

  • @sophiamanion the issue you mention is an issue that seems to be unique to that podcast. I highly recommend you report that issue to the author of the podcast, as they need to make adjustments to the actual audio file to fix that issue.

We’ve been able to replicate that issue with other Podcast apps on Android, too. The issue is that the Android Media Player recognises the file as being really long, instead of the actual duration.

  • @bernanderson can you confirm what podcast this is happening with? Is it the same one My Brother, My Brother, and Me ?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hey @staff-joey8, it is not, I’ve tried three different podcasts and they all occur to me: Adhvaitha, David Pakman (member feed), and The Daily Vedantic. I don’t think my issue is podcast specific.

  • @bernanderson Since you’re experiencing this issue on the web and desktop app, it’s best if we move this to a separate thread. We can continue here: https://forums.pocketcasts.com/forums/topic/web-and-desktop-episodes-ending-early/?view=all

I apologise, I meant to say the web-app only.

  • Unknown's avatar

I saw another issue with early ending. When using the option “start podcast after…” it seems, that sometimes the last second of episode is cut, too.

  • @fenyem That’s very unusual. Episodes should only be cut towards the end with “Skip Last” settings, but it looks like you’re referring to the “Skip First” setting. Can you please confirm you’re referring to “Skip First”?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes you are right. I mean Skip first, so episode starts later. In that case it will end some (m)sec earlier unintended.

  • @fenyem thank you for clarifying this! We’ll likely need to dig into app logs to determine the cause of this issue. Could you reach out to us through the app the next time this occurs?

You can do so by navigating to Profile > Help & Feedback > Get in touch.

You may receive an automatic response with information from our documentation. But you can simply reply to that email to escalate the logs to our team directly.
