Episodes stuck in my downloads

I’m having a problem with 4 specific episodes that I can’t get rid of. I think I accidentally manually archived them rather than removing the downloads and now they’re stuck. They’re grayed out in my downloads list but I can’t seem to get rid of them, no matter what I do. I can’t even seem to re-download them to un-download them again. Help!

I’m on Android by the way.

I’d like to help! Can you share the steps you’re using to get to your downloads list where you are seeing greyed out episodes you can’t remove from the list?

It sounds to me like you might be in a Filter, but we do also have a downloads area at Profile> Downloads. Those to parts of the app act differently, which may explain the behaviors you’re seeing.

Typically a grayed out episode is one that has been archived. Unarchiving the episode will un-do the grayed out effect.

Any further details you can share about what you’re seeing, including screenshots, would be appreciated

I’m not sure what you mean by being in a Filter, but I’m referring to the downloads area in the Profile section. I can un-do the grayed out effect by unarchiving them, but then I can’t seem to remove them from my downloads list. They’re either grayed out or not, but they’re stuck in the downloads area regardless.

Actually I just tried it again and the episodes remain grayed out, they just don’t say archived anymore.

  • If you tap on one of those episodes in the downloads list, you should see the episode’s details screen. To the left of the large play button, you should see a checkmark with the file’s size below it. Can you tap on that checkmark and select the option to remove the downloaded file?

Are you able to remove the downloaded episodes through that method?

Did anyone solve this? I am having the issue with one particular episode.

Episode 90 of “Lateral” is one that I downloaded and listened to. At the end of this it was archived and the download was deleted. but it still appears greyed out in my Downloads list.

I can now chose to unarchive it or archive it; market is played or unplayed, and I can listen to it. But I cannot download it again and I cannot delete the download (as it is not downloaded.

I have tried clearing my cache for the app and even uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but it is still there.

  • Hi @jmbreslin74 and @davidjbrims,

If you’re still having issues with deleting greyed-out downloaded episode from Profile > Downloads, would you share more information about your Pocket Casts version and device, so we can investigate further?

Please share as much information as possible: the version number, and device model and operating system version. (e.g., Pocket Casts iOS app version 7.67.0.3 on iPhone 13 mini, iOS 17.5.1).

I have fixed my issue. I unsubscribed from the podcast and resubscribed. This cleared the stuck episode, so it is all clean again.

    I am on Android 7.65 (9251) on a Samsung Galaxy AO3.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m so glad that worked @davidjbrims! Thanks for letting us know how you were able to fix it. Please, let us know if anything else goes wrong. We’ll work with you until it’s correct again.

i am having this same problem, but unsubscribing and resubscribing is not cleaning out the grayed out episodes… and no archiving. i’ve removed the download (there is no checkmark left) but they are staying on the list.

  • Hi @jmbreslin74, @amwilliams59, @davidjbrims

Our Android development team identified the root cause for the issue where you weren’t able to remove episodes from the downloads list, and the fix is underway for v.7.93.

    https://github.com/Automattic/pocket-casts-android/pull/4167

Please be on the lookout for the next version release!

I’m now having this issue. Listened to podcasts aren’t deleted, just archived. The clutter in Downloads is now such that it’s increasingly difficult to navigate.

Unfollowing and re-following makes them disappear, but that’s not feasible for multiple podcasts on a daily basis.

Is there any update on this?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am having this same issue too. But for every podcast I listen too. It’s very frustrating that my downloads are now cluttered up with archived episodes I’ve listened to.

Unsubscribing and resubscribing does not solve the issue. I’ve always loved Pocket Casts but I’m getting to the point where I’m going to look at switching to another platform.

  • Unknown's avatar

The issue applies to every podcast I listen to as well. I’m also considering switching.

I’ve been having the same problem for the past three days. I’ve tried everything short of uninstalling the app; does anyone else going through this know if that helped anything? I have so many podcasts that I don’t want to have to go through the time sink of organising them all that I know I’ll have to unless it actually fixes this.

  • Hi there, @posttokev, @davidhallth, @rebekahjbortolin! Thank you for bringing this issue in the Profile > Downloads section to our attention. Not being able to remove episodes from the downloads list is a known issue, and the fix is underway for v.7.93. Please be on the lookout for the next version release!

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks for replying. What’s the time frame for v.7.93 please? (And how will we known when it’s released?)

  • Unknown's avatar

@rebekahjbortolin mine is exactly the same issue. It only started in Wednesday this week. But as I subscribe to around 60 podcasts(!!) I cannot face starting again with another provider. If it isn’t fixed I’m going to have to though.

As @posttokev says, thanks for the reply Eleanor. Hope your update solves the issue.

  • Unknown's avatar

Interestingly, episodes downloaded before 9 July DO drop off the list when played. Those after Wednesday don’t. So it’s only a very recent glitch in the system. I really hope it can be fixed.

  • Thanks for sharing those extra details, @davidhallth. You’re absolutely right that this is a recent issue affecting the Downloads list on Android, and our team has been actively working on it.

We’re aiming to begin rolling out version 7.93 on July 18, starting with a small percentage of users. If all goes smoothly, a full release is expected by July 24.

Keep an eye out for the update in the Play Store!
