Episodes stuck in Queued for Download and doesn’t proceed

  • Unknown's avatar

When I attempt to download an episode while connected to Wi-Fi, it says cute for download and doesn’t proceed. If I disconnect from Wi-Fi then cancel the download and re-attempt, it works.

As suggested by the AI help,

    1. My internet seems fine, everything else works
    2. I have restarted multiple times
    3. The app is up to date as far as I can tell (v7.53)
    4. I have cleared the app cache and restarted
    5. I have ~40 GB of free storage space

Also I followed the suggestions from this thread, to no avail:

    https://forums.pocketcasts.com/forums/topic/downloads-over-cellular-or-mobile-data-not-working/#post-666

If the forum will let me I’ll add a screenshot of the log that looks like it’s erroring when I try to download. Also, the status page shows all check marks.

We can help! Just to confirm, when you say you followed the steps from that thread, does that mean you checked the following:

    • Profile > Settings (gear icon) > Storage & Data Use: Is “Warn before using data” enabled? If yes, see if turning it off helps.
    • Profile > Settings (gear icon)  > Auto Download: Is “Only on WiFi” or “Only on unmetered WiFi” enabled? If yes, please disable it.
    • Android: Phone’s Settings > Connections > Data usage, enabled
    • iOS: Phone’s Settings > Pocket Casts > Mobile Data, enabled

If you checked those out then our next steps will be to investigate if you’re using an VPN or ad blocking services, as those can disrupt our download process. If you have any of those services or apps active I recommend temporarily disabling them and seeing if that improves things for you.

Thanks for getting back to me. I checked each of those settings in Pocket Casts and they are disabled. I also tried to find anything related to data usage for my Android phone and for the Pocket Casts app in my phone’s settings and enable all of them. Still no luck.

I was able to export the log but I can’t figure out how to add either the .txt file or an image to this post (I see the image upload but I don’t think I have permission). Here is an excerpt from the last section of the log right after I attempt to download and it returns to saying “queued”.

I 02/1 21:38:58 Download stopped, will retry with No restrictions. Run later. • Looking at this log:

... Failed to create a secure connection to the author's server...
... Failure in SSL library, usually a protocol error...

I’m guessing that the issue you’re encountering might be specific to this podcast or episode. Can you confirm this? Is the download problem occurring with this particular podcast or certain episodes?

If so, is it a public podcast you’re having trouble with? If that’s the case, could you please provide us with the shared link to the podcast?

Here’s how to get a share link for a podcast: https://support.pocketcasts.com/article/sharing-podcasts-and-episodes/

    Thank you.

Thanks for getting back to me. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be related to any specific podcast, as this happens with any show that I’ve tried so far. Here are links to the episodes I just tried to download:

all of which exhibited the behavior where I press the download button and it just says “queued” indefinitely. I don’t think I’ve mentioned this yet but if I come back to check on it after a long time (usually the next day), the status will change to “download failed.” I finally realized I can just link to the full log, I think the relevant parts start around line 2511: https://pastebin.com/5yCJ08az

Thanks again for your help, I’m not sure if I’m the only person affected by it but hopefully we can get this figured out and improve the app.

  • Hi there, @jjbloon!

Thanks for sharing this with us. Can you please confirm what device and operating system your device has?

The reason I ask is that Android 7 devices generally have similar errors, and that bug has not been resolved as yet. If your device is on Android 7, then you would need to upgrade to a newer Android version for the problem to go away.

If that isn’t the case, can you also please check on the following?

    1. Do you perhaps have a firewall, VPN, or ad-blocker active on your device that could interrupt your network connection?
    2. Please also check your primary WiFi connection. In particular, please see if it has any sort of ad-blocking or filtering installed on it. One example would be this: https://pi-hole.net/

Let me know how it goes 👍

    Hello again.

My device is a Pixel 7 running Android 14, so I should be covered there.

    For the other items:

    1. To my knowledge I have no abnormal firewall running either on the device or in my Wifi network config. In the Android VPN settings, there are no VPNs added. I haven’t added any device-wide adblockers to my device, although I do run a browser with built in adblock (Brave) but I access Pocket Casts through the app, not the browser.
    2. I haven’t added any adblocking devices or software to my Wifi config, either as a separate device like a Pi-hole or through my router. My router software does seem to have a few built in restrictions for basic attack prevention that I haven’t altered since installing it, so I will attempt to disable these and see if that makes any difference.

Let me know if there’s anything else I should look at. Thanks again for your help.

Breakthrough: while digging deep in my router’s control app, I found a list of optional restrictions (categorized under parental controls), all of which were disabled except “Web Advertisements.” After disabling that, my downloads seem to now work as intended. Thank you for your guidance in resolving this.

  • That’s some great sleuthing on your part, @jjbloon! And we appreciate you reporting back as the information you share just might help another user in the future, so thank you!

for me the problem was that I migrated to a new phone. Old phone had an sd card and everything was stored there. The new one does not have it, but the app failed to notice this and would not download episodes. After manually selecting storage to Phone it started working again

  • Thanks for sharing this with us, @trajektorijus!

I am glad to hear that it helped fix the issue for you. If others are facing a similar issue, can you give that a try?
