Feature Request: an option to customize the stats displayed on podcast pages

  • Unknown's avatar

As shown in the screenshot, the podcast page currently shows the total and archived episode counts. However, the archived episodes count is less relevant to me as it includes both episodes that I’m interested in and have played, and those I’m not. Besides the total episode count, the most informative numbers for me are the counts of played episodes and unarchived episodes, which indicate my enjoyment of the podcast and the remaining episodes that await listening or archiving, respectively.

Others have suggested showing “Time Remaining” on the podcast feed page (Feature Request: Show “Time Remaining” on podcast feed page | Pocket Casts Forum). While this is a good idea, I’d prefer to see the count of unarchived episodes. Therefore, I propose letting users choose the stats they value most to be displayed.

I know I can tell how many unarchived and unplayed episodes each podcast has by setting badges to “All unfinished” on the Podcasts tab, but it’s a little annoying when there’s a batch of podcasts marked with 99 in the top right corner of their fancy artwork.

Moreover, for grouped episodes on the podcast page, displaying the total and unarchived episode counts next to the group label would be beneficial.

  • Hi @derekzhang98,

Thanks for your suggestion! It sounds like you’re looking for statistics of listening history. Since current listening history simply lists the last 1000 episodes without any stats, I’ve made a feature request on your behalf to improve how listening history is displayed, citing your suggestions and screenshot.

    Hi @staff-bluejay,

Adding statistics of listening history to Profile > Stats or Listening History is a great idea. However, my request is to customize the statistics shown on the podcast page as indicated in the screenshot.

I am the kind of person who, after subscribing to a podcast, goes through the entire episode list to keep the episodes that interest me and archive the others. I often go to the podcast page to pick a few episodes from the remaining episodes to add to Next Up, and I only set up auto-archiving of the episodes that have been played. So, it would be more convenient to see the number of unarchived episodes which in my case indicates how many episodes of interest are left, and the number of played episodes which implies how much I like the podcast.

Showing listening history statistics can let me know my favorite podcasts from the past to the present, but it cannot tell me how many interesting episodes of each podcast are waiting to be played.

Besides, I don’t understand why your team chose to display the number of archived episodes including played episodes that are auto-archived by default, and episodes manually archived by the user. What message can the number of archived episodes convey? I would appreciate it if you could explain my confusion.

    Best,
    Derek

  • Hello @derekzhang98,

We’ve passed your feedback over to the team for future consideration.

In theory, the archived episodes can also show you how many you’ve listened to unless you are archiving them without playing them. So if you have numerous archived episodes, it’s likely you have listened to many of those. Similar to how you’re requesting the time listened be shown there, archived episodes would show you listen to that podcast often.

Hi @staff-reid, Thank you for your assistance. I would like to have a brief clarification of your response.

In theory, the archived episodes can also show you how many you’ve listened to unless you are archiving them without playing them. So if you have numerous archived episodes, it’s likely you have listened to many of those.

Indeed, I do archive episodes that I’m not interested of listening to, so the number of archived episodes cannot reflect my affection for the podcast.

Similar to how you’re requesting the time listened be shown there, archived episodes would show you listen to that podcast often.

In fact, I didn’t request to show the time listened, as stated in the original post:

Others have suggested showing “Time Remaining” on the podcast feed page (Feature Request: Show “Time Remaining” on podcast feed page | Pocket Casts Forum). While this is a good idea, I’d prefer to see the count of unarchived episodes. Therefore, I propose letting users choose the stats they value most to be displayed.

I would prefer to display data such as the number of played episodes and the number of unarchived episodes to the left of “Show archived”. Additionally, I agree that it’s great to let users to know the amount of time they spend on each podcast, which could be displayed on the podcast page or Profile > Stats.

  • Thank you for your clarification on this! I’ve added this to the feature request as well, so our developers will have a full understanding of the request when considering it for future development.
