Feature Request: unlock the Pocket Casts iOS app on the Mac
-
the web portal and the mac app are pretty lousy and do not have the same features as the iOS app but developers have the ability to unlock their iOS app for distribution in the Mac app store…please enable this!
-
i’m requesting this so that the following features could be enabled on the Mac:
- Notifications
- Downloads
- Filters
-
Thanks for reaching out!
I’ve gone ahead and forwarded this along to our developers as a feature request. I can’t offer an estimated timeframe or confirmation that it will be implemented, but our developers will certainly take it into consideration!

@dbarros We don’t have any news on this at the moment, but I’ve added your comment to the existing feature request so our developers can take it into consideration going forward.

I’d also like to see this be possible. The web/desktop app is good and I use it daily but the native experience would be great since there are still significant features unavailable in the web app. Alternatively it would be nice for the web app to have feature parity with the mobile app but I’m not sure that’s on the cards.

I agree! That would be the awesome.
For now I’ve added your voice @suburbiaboy to our ongoing conversation on unlocking the Pocket Casts iOS app on the Mac.

I thought you might find it interesting that Marco Arment said that he allows the iPad version of Overcast to be used on the Mac and he has more Mac users than iPad users. So there’s clearly some demand.
Listen to his comments here -
I’m very much interested in switching from Overcast to Pocket Casts but the feature parity loss between iOS and Desktop app will probably keep me on Overcast.
-
Thank you both @powerschill and @suburbiaboy!
I can confirm that your feedback has been relayed to our development team. They will consider this when deciding what new features to add.
If others are interested in such a feature, please comment on this thread with a +1

I’m wondering what the downsides are to this.. I’d love to be able to use the app on my mac.
Normally I listen on my phone, but then every time my mac burps, the headphones switch back there and my phone pauses playback. So, lately I’ve had to use the web version more.. which is fine until I can’t find the right tab for forwarding, etc. Having the pocketcasts app on my mac (vs trying to make a web app out of it) would be awesome.

@allenhancock we do offer a Mac app, which is based on the web version of Pocket Casts. You can download it here: https://pocketcasts.com/downloads/mac
With the Mac app, it can live in your dock and won’t get lost in your browser tabs — it can be accessed from Expose or the application switcher keyboard commands.
As for implementing the iPad app as a Mac app, that is something we’ve explored and may explore again in the future, but the app in its current form is optimized for touch input and some of the interactions in the app don’t quite translate well to the Mac’s input methods.

This desktop app seems great.. and it seems like the keyboard shortcuts in this article:
Help Center
Seem to work just fine in the desktop app too (but there’s no visual indication.. mouse hover, etc)
So, technically this isn’t “unlocking the ipad app for mac”, but it totally solves the problem (for me at least), Thanks for pointing out the native mac app!
