Google Maps stops Pocket Cast playing
-
If I’m playing a podcast in Pocket Casts and then start Google Maps navigation it stops the podcast after a few seconds (it fades out in volume over those seconds – not an abrupt stop), and if I hit play again it will play for a few seconds and then fade out again and stop so I can’t actually make it play.
iOS 16.6 and Pocket Casts are updated. It is an iPhone 13. It doesn’t happen with Apple Maps. It doesn’t happen with Apple Music. It does happen with Overcast which is why this seems like a bug with Google-seems like the API for 3rd party app audio is the problem which is why Apple Music works? This is for a podcast that has been downloaded or is streaming. I have no problem using Pocket Casts around the house with AirPods. This started about a month ago. The phone is plugged in USB to lightning in a car without CarPlay. I tried toggling on the Google maps access to Apple Music but that didn’t fix it. I have maps set on mute so it doesn’t announce directions.

So, you’re saying that your Pocket Casts stops playing after a few seconds when you launch Google Maps navigation, even though Google Maps doesn’t interrupt or send any notifications, correct?
Have you tried starting Google Maps first and then launching Pocket Casts? I understand that when you hit play again, it fades out, but I’m curious if the sequence of opening the apps makes any difference.

Are you saying this problem only occurs when you connect your phone to your car via a USB to Lightning cable? Since you don’t use CarPlay, does the issue still persist if you don’t connect your phone?
I’m curious if your car’s head unit has a system in place that routes the sound through the USB connection and simply refuses to play sounds from two apps simultaneously. Of course, this is just a guess on my part so I could be completely off base.

I am having the same issue with Pocketcast’s volume turning down to 0 when I use Google Maps. I’ve muted the audio directions on the Google Maps app. I’m connected to my Car Audio player via Bluetooth. Is there a resolution to this issue?

@lauragoodsell can you please confirm with us what device you are experiencing this issue on? Also, you are using Bluetooth to connect, not CarPlay or Android Auto, right?

I have been experiencing this for years with Google Maps and Pocketcast. This wasn’t always the case. A few years ago, if you were navigating in Google Maps and a podcast was also playing, directions would be clear and the podcast would still play in the background but at like 25% volume until directions were over and then the volume would resume at 100%. This seems like it is a Google Maps and Pocketcast issue as Google Maps and YouTube Music work seamlessly. If I am traveling with a lot of voice directions coming quickly, and then they stop (as I’m driving straight for a foreseeable amount of time) it can be minutes before the podcast comes back on. I have an older Pixel (4XL) but I again do remember this working and then an update happened and it has been this way for a few years. Any help in this (small) matter would be great! Thanks!

@loizzo54875732d0 Which setting do you have enabled under Profile > Settings (gear icon) > Notifications > Play over notifications?
Also, do you have a “Battery settings” warning in Profile > Settings (gear icon)?
