How do I autoplay I’m chronological order instead of reverse?

say I have 3 unplayed episodes of a podcast, and like I assume most people do, I want to play them in chronological order, how do I change the autoplay settings so that after playing the oldest of the 3, it autoplays the next newest episode until it catches up to present time.

currently, for some reason, it does the exact opposite and will start autoplaying the next oldest episode, so it’s choosing episodes in reverse chronological order.

I get that I can manually add things to the queue, but the whole point of autoplay was that you don’t need to do that, so…

    Thanks for any help.

Great question, and something I would like to know as well. In my case I would like to listen to a podcast from the earliest (oldest) episode to the most recent. While that doesn’t apply to many podcasts, it does to the likes of Serial and such.

Have you tried changing how the screen you play from is sorted? Autoplay works based on the sort order of the list the podcast was played from, so if you start playing the episode from the podcast screen, for example, make sure that screen is sorted in the order you want autoplay to play the episodes. The same logic applies if you play from somewhere else (i.e., a filter, downloads, starred, etc.), just make sure that screen is sorted the way you want to autoplay the episodes.

Let me know if that helps.

Thanks Matt, that looks promising although I have had the ordering switched back to “Newest to Oldest” at times as it does not seem to stick to “Oldest to Newest”. Can’t quite narrow down what is causing that.

What I cannot get right is the ability to subscribe to a podcast and have it auto download an episode at a time from oldest to newest. Is that at all possible?

  • Great question! Are you wanting to only download single episodes and keep them in the sort order from oldest to newest, or download all episodes of a podcast in a single action, while maintaining your sort order preference?

In my case I would like to subscribe to a podcast in oldest to newest, with it downloading an oldest to newest episode at a time. That way I could listen to the podcast in the correct order without having to use of heaps of space.

Currently I want to list to The History of English podcast which consists of 172 episodes that need to be listened to in order. I’d run out of space downloading all of those at once!

  • @phiali We don’t have an auto download setting yet based on sort order, but you may want to consider downloading episodes in bulk using multi-select:

Then, you can set Auto Archive settings so that episodes are automatically archived after you are done playing them. Archiving will then remove the downloaded file, which should help with managing the available space on your device.

Thanks, I’ll give that a go as it’ll be better than nothing :)

i have moved here from Google podcasts. this is my greatest frustration.

there needs to be a new play option to play episodes in the actual order of the podcast, e.g. 200, then 201, etc.

I’ve tried all the existing sort options and none does this

i wonder if it is a bug?

    thsnks

  • @skiernz, we don’t have a way to do this currently, but I’ve added your comment to the existing feature request for this. Thank you!

I too would like to piggyback off of this. I listen to fantasy football podcasts and I’m currently trying to get caught up to current episodes by starting with episodes from July. I want it to play the next newest episode when the previous one ends, but it’s playing the next oldest one, which is very frustrating. There absolutely needs to be a new sort option for chronological order of the next episode that plays. Thanks!

  • @jjtitan83 thank you! I’ve added your comments to the feature request as well!

Adding my input – I am just trying the app for the first time, and I have to say, this will probably be a deal breaker for me. Pressing play and having episodes play chronologically is my default usage, and having to do extra steps for that or end up having to get my phone out and go through multiple steps while walking/running/biking/cooking/driving won’t work for me.

I personally don’t see this as an odd preference on my part – I wouldn’t want to listen to any podcast in backward order, and I’m guessing the idea is people are making their own playlists, but that shouldn’t be a required step to listen to episodes in order.

I’m here because Spotify is down and I’m interested in trying something new to maybe switch to permanently, and based on my experience so far I would pay for this app except for this issue. Hope it gets addressed, maybe I’ll try again someday!

  • Thank you for your feedback @kristinaaharris. We appreciate it. We’ll make sure to note this down.

Please add my vote to this much needed feature. An option to listen to podcasts in chronological order is critical for many – made even more important when listening while driving!

Hi there, @ottosonm! I’ve also added your vote :)

Hi there. I too would like to add my vote to this.
I’m moving from Apple Podcasts (as I’m switching over to Android) and really need Pocket Casts to play episodes in the order of release for it to be useful to me.

Hi, @matthewkiranrose! Welcome to Pocket Casts :)

I’ve added your vote for this.

Meeeeee Too! Reading podcast episodes from oldest rig newest is really the only logical way to do it in my mind. If not that then a custom playlist makes sense. I don’t see newest to oldest making sense for most people.

  • @stevet2015 thank you for your thoughts, I’ve added your vote as well!
