Improve Sleep Timer Functionality!

Hi there. An android user and a newcomer from a competitor podcasting app here. I like Pocket Casts a lot and I think it is really superior to other competitors in every other way except for a critical issue I always have with the app: the sleep timer is not functional enough.

The “normal” behavior I found from my previous app’s sleep timer is pausing the episode after it’s finished, marking it as played, and advancing to the next episode in my queue or playlist unplayed. In Pocket Casts, none of these happen except pausing the episode 4 seconds left without any played marking, which always gets me worrying about manually marking that episode I played and manually removing it from my queue after playing the next one EACH AND EVERY TIME I TURN OFF THE SLEEP TIMER AND SET IT TO END OF EPISODE!

I’m sure someone at least contacted you about this either through your forum or your support email, and I dunno about if that behavior occurs on iOS or Web, but I guess that could be a decent and quick fix, so what would you say about fixing it?

  • Welcome to Pocket Casts, @aelbrens! It looks like you might be using the “End of Episode” setting. Is that right?

If yes, you’re correct. The following is quite a common concern about how the sleep timer works:

In Pocket Casts, none of these happen except pausing the episode 4 seconds left without any played marking, which always gets me worrying about manually marking that episode I played and manually removing it from my queue after playing the next one

Our sleep timer, however, was purposely designed to not completely finish the current episode on the “End of Episode” setting. The idea is that, if you do fall asleep while the episode is playing, it won’t be marked as played or archived.

When you wake up, you then have the option to resume the episode if you ended up falling asleep while it played previously. You can also choose to mark it as played instead.

I really enjoyed this 4 second approach, but it seems to have been changed from the latest version of the Android app (7.65 RC 2, 9238), and marks the episode as played!?

Could you let us know what type of sleep timer settings you’re using when this occurs? Are you using one of the time-based sleep timers or the chapter or episode ones?
