Improved drag-and-drop in Up Next (like Castro)

The drag-and-drop management in Castro’s queue (similar to “Up Next”) is really good. Here are some specific things I miss:

    • While dragging an episode, tap the top of the window to scroll to the top of the list. Useful to move something to near the top quickly. In Pocket Casts, tapping the top to scroll to top works when you’re not dragging anything.
    • While dragging an episode, tap other episodes to drag multiple. When you drop, they are inserted at that point in the order you tapped them. The first-dragged episode first, the last-tapped episode last.

Castro will also let you long-press to start dragging an episode, which I find more convenient than using the drag target off to the side, but this would require bigger changes to Pocket Casts since it currently is for either playing or showing the action menu. So that would probably be one step too far.

  • Thanks for your feedback, @henrikn!

I have submitted this as a feature request to my team. They will consider it when deciding what new features to add to our app :)

It’s great to learn that tapping the status bar should scroll to the top, but it’s puzzling why it doesn’t work for me, neither on the Up Next page nor elsewhere. My PC is running version 7.76 (9282) on Android 13.

Additionally, when dragging an episode toward the bottom of the screen on the Up Next page, it tends to automatically and quickly scroll down multiple screens to the bottom of the list.

  • Hi @derekzhang98,

top, but it’s puzzling why it doesn’t work for me, neither on the Up
Next page nor elsewhere. My PC is running version 7.76 (9282) on Android

This behavior is only available on iPhone at the moment.

I’m unable to reproduce this issue on my end. What do you mean by scrolling down “multiple screens”? How many episodes do you currently have on Up Next?

    Hi @staff-bluejay,

This behavior is only available on iPhone at the moment.

Hope Android has this feature too.

I noticed that version 7.76 (9282) replaced the “CLEAR QUEUE” with a bin icon in the action bar. I guess this is in response to requests from users who want to be able to easily clear the queue when they are not at the top of Up Next. However, I have reservations about this change because the bin icon is not as clear as the “CLEAR QUEUE” text. I don’t know if tapping the bin icon will clear my entire queue or enable multiple selection mode to select multiple episodes to remove like the multiple-select button next to it. I think if it clears the entire queue, you will provide a confirmation pop-up to prevent accidental deletion. But it undoubtedly introduces the user’s doubt before tapping the bin button, which is not found when tapping the original “CLEAR QUEUE”. I think if users can tap the status bar to quickly return to the top of Up Next, there is no need to put the entry of clearing the queue in the action bar.

Additionally, when dragging an episode toward the bottom of the screen
on the Up Next page, it tends to automatically and quickly scroll down
multiple screens to the bottom of the list.

I’m sorry that my original words were a bit exaggerated. When I had more than a dozen episodes in Up Next, the screen would automatically scroll quickly when I dragged an episode close to the top or bottom of the current screen, so fast that I often reached the top or bottom of the entire Up Next before I could react, so I had the impression that it would scroll multiple screens. I tried it again, and now there are 33 episodes in Up Next, and the screen automatically scrolls at a suitable speed when I drag an episode to the top or end of the screen. Thank you for your time and kindness.

    Best,
    Derek
