iOS: Not receiving notifications from Pocket Casts

  • We received the following case:

    I no longer get notified when a new episode becomes available. It’s been happening for months. When I first turned it on for some podcasts it worked but now it’s gone 🙁

    I have tried the following to no avail:
    Turning my phone on and off.
    Closing the app and restarting.
    Turning notifications off then back on.
    Turning notifications off then back on after restarting my phone.
    I’m using an iPhone that is fully up to date.
    The only thing I haven’t tried is deleting the app and reinstalling as I’m worried I’ll lose all my podcasts.

    The first thing to check is whether notifications are enabled in both Pocket Casts and your iOS Settings.

    To check this in Pocket Casts, you can go to Profile > Settings > Notifications and confirm that it is enabled.
    To then check if notifications are enabled in iOS, you can go to Settings > Pocket Casts, and then ensure notifications are enabled. If you’re using a Focus Mode, make sure that Pocket Casts is not being blocked.

    If the above is fine, then it would be good if you could reply to this message with the following information:

    • Did you recently migrate to a new device?
    • For how long has this been happening?
    • Are notifications from other apps coming through?

    Additionally, reinstalling Pocket Casts could help but you will need to keep in mind that you will lose your downloaded files and custom settings. All of your Podcast subscriptions will remain intact if you’re logged into a Pocket Casts Sync account.

    I’m having this issue and have done since I recently upgraded to an iPhone 15 Pro Max, I’m using app version 7.48 and all my other notifications are coming through fine.

    Thank you for checking that out! Can you let me know what your settings are for notifications both on your system and in your Pocket Casts app? This will help us direct our investigation further.

    For example, in Pocket Casts> Settings> Notifications I have the new episodes toggled on for 2 Podcasts, The Daily and The Sleepy Bookshelf. App Badge is off. In Settings> Notifications> Pocket Casts I have all 3 checked: Lock Screen, Notification Center and Banners, along with Sounds and Badges toggled on.

    I am having the exact same issue. iPhone 15 Pro Max, app version 7.49. I’m coming from an iPhone 13 Pro Max and had no issues at all then. Only since upgrading devices has this problem started. I’ve gone through all notifications settings in iOS and the Pocket Casts app and verified that every possible notification is turned on.

  • @ysmbqf6yd7 that is interesting. It might not be ideal, but reinstalling the app might help in this case, since it is possible that something went wrong if you use the Apple migration tool when switching to a new phone.

    Note that if you do reinstall the app, all of your downloads and custom settings will get cleared.

    I have the same issue since I upgraded my iPhone

  • Our developers are looking into it, and we have filed a bug report for it here: https://github.com/Automattic/pocket-casts-ios/issues/1198
    You can keep an eye on that bug report for updates. 
     
    That said, the only solution we have right now is to uninstall the app and reinstall it. This isn’t ideal since your downloads and custom settings will be removed, but that seems to be the only way to get the notifications to work after doing a device migration.
