Issue with Playback Progress on Android
-
I’m experiencing an issue with the Pocket Casts app on my Android device. Whenever I switch the app to the background and then reopen it, the playback progress bar automatically rewinds and starts playing from a few minutes back from where I left off.
I’ve found the “Smart Playback Resume” option in the settings. However, regardless of whether this option is turned on or off, the problem still persists. I’ve also tried updating the app and restarting it, but the issue remains.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any suggestions on how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there, @laridzhang!
This is quite interesting. Can you please check on the following:
- Does your app have unrestricted battery access? More info on this here
- Does this occur with just specific podcasts, or all of them?
- Is this happening while playback is going on in the background too?
- Do you have any other devices connected to your Pocket Casts account?
Please let us know!

Hi, @staff-joey8
-Does your app have unrestricted battery access?
-Yes. I setted it to unrestricted. However, I don’t think this would be a problem, because I switch the app to the background and reopen it immediately (I do not kill this app in the background. It is running and the podcast is playing in the background correctly) and the playback progress bar automatically rewinds.-Does this occur with just specific podcasts, or all of them?
-All of them.-Is this happening while playback is going on in the background too?
-Yes. Whether I’m playing in the background or not (playing or pause a podcast), it happens.-Do you have any other devices connected to your Pocket Casts account?
-It’s my first time using Pocket Casts, so there should not be any other devices connected to my account.BTW, when I switch the app to the background and reopen it immediately, the playback progress bar automatically rewinds several times in a short time. It rewinds about 10 seconds every time. For example, a podcast is playing and the progess bar is about 05:00. When I reopen the app, the playback progress bar gradually rewinds to 04:50, 04:40, 04:30, … 03:10, 03:00.

@laridzhang This is quite an unusual issue that I don’t think I’ve seen before. I also tried replicating the behavior you described, but I haven’t been able to do that yet. That said, let’s try to narrow this down.
First, can you please make sure to completely turn off Intelligent Playback Resumption under Profile > Settings (gear icon) > General?
If you then confirm that the issue persists with the setting disabled, please keep it disabled. Then, kindly share a screen recording with us of the actions you’re taking. You can upload it to a file-sharing service like Google Drive or similar. This will hopefully help us replicate the issue on our end.
Please also let us know if you might be using a Bluetooth device, like headphones or a speaker, when listening on Pocket Casts. If yes, please let us know which kind.

I finally found the cause of the issue, which is caused by an assistant software “Li Tiaotiao (李跳跳)” that automatically closes the opening screen advertisement of any app. This software will automatically click the ads close button in the app interface, maybe the skip 10 seconds playing time button in the playback interface is misrecognized.
I’m sorry for the misunderstanding.

No apology needed, @laridzhang! And we appreciate you taking the time to report back, as your findings may help other users in the future as well. So, thank you very much!

I too have this problem. And I don’t have any “assistant app” as described above in the “solution”. The app is buggy in this regard.

@pbeardsell Many factors affect playback, so your particular issue is very likely different from the one experienced by the thread creator.
Have you, however, already gone through the suggestions we made above (battery access, Intelligent Playback Resumption, and so on) to help narrow down the issue? Can you let us know what you found?
