Issues with new version and Google Home
-
I’ve been successfully using PocketCasts with our Google Home speaker system for about 8 months. Last week I ran a bunch of updates on my iPhone 15 Pro and now the Google home screen looks different when I launch it from Pocket Casts and it refuses to start to play. It plays locally (on phone or airpods) but as soon as I go to More Actions >ChromeCast… and choose the speaker it stops playing.
The pocket Cast icon looks like it should be playing (play button is pause icon) but no sound.
I checked the LInked Apps>Audio in Google Home Settings and i see lots of options (SPotify, iHeartRadio, Deezer, etc) but no PocketCasts. Is there some way to get PocketCasts recognized as an official app for Google Home?

We don’t have support for being used as an audio source in this way, just by sending audio to speakers through ChromeCast. But we have heard from users that would like to see it implemented. I’ve gone ahead and added your comments to the existing feature request so our developers can take it into consideration when planning future development.
As for the trouble you’re running into when trying to send audio to your Google Home speaker from Pocket Casts, have you tried restarting the Google Home speaker and/or your iPhone to see if that resolves the issue?

I’m having this same issue. Have restarted the speaker and phone (and have tried from 2 different phones). Thank you

Hi @jillmlry,
Regarding the recent issues you’re experiencing, where casting stops working after the iOS update, here are a few additional troubleshooting steps you can try:
- Check for Pocket Casts Updates: Please ensure you’re running the latest version of the Pocket Casts app. We may have released an update addressing this issue, or it could be included in an upcoming release.
- Check Google Home App Updates: Similarly, make sure your Google Home app is also up-to-date.
- Network Connectivity: While you’ve restarted devices, sometimes network issues can cause problems. Try these:
- Router Restart: Restart your Wi-Fi router.
- Network Switching (if applicable): If you can, try switching your phone between Wi-Fi and mobile data to see if the issue is network-related.
- “Forget” and Reconnect Chromecast: In the Google Home app, you might be able to “forget” or remove your Google Home speaker and then set it up again. This can sometimes resolve connectivity glitches.
- Test with Another Chromecast Device (if available): If you have another Chromecast-enabled device (like a Chromecast dongle on a TV), try casting to that device from Pocket Casts to isolate whether the issue is specific to your Google Home speaker or a more general Chromecast problem.

Hi, I have done all of these. Also, the casting works fine with other apps (eg spotify). This issue with pocketcast has been ongoing for over 1 week. Thanks

Hello! Speakers used are multiple Nest Minis, and a mesh WiFi point. I do see them listed, and when you select the speaker it makes the “connection” sound from the speaker, but does not play.

@jillmlry It looks like you have Pocket Casts Plus? Could you please send us your app logs via the app so we can investigate further? Please include a link to this thread with your message. Thanks.
Collecting App Logs

It seems like PocketCasts works better with episodes that are already locally downloaded. There might be a bit of a lag in streaming new episodes and Chromecast doesn’t make the connection and times out too quickly.

Hi @ntripcevich, thanks for that information.
It’d be best if you could send us your app logs.
I have reached out to the email address associated with your forum account. Please reply to that email with app logs, so we can investigate further. Thanks!
