Keep playback controls visible in the Up Next screen

I use Up Next all the time, and when I start playing an episode (long press) I need to fast forward through the ads right away. It’s too many taps/swipes to get back to the playback controls and fast forward while being assaulted by loud terrible advertising.

Another way of looking at it is that Next Up is my primary UI in Pocket Casts. I use the feed once a day to queue stuff up, but from then on I’m working in Up Next to change order and start different episodes. I need the playback controls there while I’m doing that work (even more than I need them in the feed).

We all know the essential nature of podcast listening is interactive. You have to fast forward the ads. It’s work we are all willing to do. Making it (slightly) harder to do that work is frustrating. I hypothesize that nobody is queueing up hours of podcasts in Up Next and listing through them all without interacting.

@abellenz If you go to the Up Next tab (instead of swiping up or pressing the button in the player), you can see the playback controls floating at the bottom of the screen like in the rest of the app. You can also turn on “Open Player Automatically” in general settings so the fullscreen player comes up automatically when you start playing an episode. Additionally, you can set up “Skip First” and “Skip Last” in the podcast-level settings to automatically skip pre- and post-rolls.

  • @kapods22 thank you for your suggestions on this!

@abellenz I’ve also forwarded this feedback along to our developers, which they will take into consideration when refining the Up Next queue experience going forward.
