Language issues related to Chinese
-
- Pocket Casts version: 7.6.8
- Android 11
- Device: MEIZU 17
- Inaccurate translation
- play next of new episode’s notification should be 下一个播放 in Chinese, not 播放下一个, which means play the next episode in the playlist rather than the current new episode.
- play end of new episode’s notification should be 最后(一个)播放 in Chinese, not 播放最后一个, which means play the final episode in the playlist rather than the current new episode.
- All Chinese translations for play next and play end in the app should be corrected.
- Why not provide language options to users?
- Search issue
- The search box on the podcast’s homepage doesn’t recognize many Chinese words, especially Chinese names like 袁凌. The current search seems to be lexically based and does not handle Chinese characters effectively, especially when searching for Chinese names, which is a significant issue as I frequently look for episodes featuring specific hosts or guests..

We know our translations can use improvement. I’ve let the team know about search as well. If you are willing to help, we do have a translation project here to get the app in proper translation: https://translate.wordpress.com/projects/pocket-casts/android/

I ran into several language issues while dealing with Chinese translations, especially around context and industry-specific terms. Literal translations just didn’t work well for us. We eventually worked with a Chinese translator from MarsTranslation, and the difference was noticeable — the content sounded much more natural and culturally appropriate. They handled things like tone, technical wording, and regional usage really well. For Chinese, I’ve learned that having an experienced, professional translator actually matters a lot.
