Listen to episodes in sequential order

I like to listen to my podcast episodes in sequential order, starting from the beginning.

How do I set it up so that when Episode 1 is done playing, then Episode 2 is automatically downloaded and added to Up Next?

It seems like all features are related to New episodes, but I’m not caught up with any of the podcasts on my list and if i start a new (to me) podcast in the middle, then i’m missing out on format changes and inside jokes from the last 50 episodes.

I just want to listen to episodes in order or release date and not have to download every episode manually.

  • Hello @khutch288ef6f735fd,

That’s a great request! I’ll submit this to the team on your behalf for future consideration.

    Hi.
Just out of interest, has this feature been addressed. Having transferred my podcast listening from Player FM recently this is the one aspect that I do miss that I haven’t identified a solution for. Both of these options were present in other podcast listening apps but applied in slightly differing ways. The same would be useful in the web app.

The ability to binge listen to a podcast series without having to reset the next up back to the next episode in sequence.
Listen to ‘historic’ podcasts in sequence order and download the next un-listened episode for next up, not the most recent episode.

In addition the ability to archive all previous episodes to a specific point rather than just all episodes would have been very useful after my transfer.
    Cheers

  • @seajaycampbell we did not implement this specific feature as yet, but we did add an autoplay feature in our app: https://support.pocketcasts.com/knowledge-base/autoplay/

If that feature is enabled and you have an empty Up Next queue, you can go to a podcast page, set the ‘Sort episodes’ option to ‘Oldest to newest’, then play the oldest episode first and it will play the episodes in that order so the newest episode will be played last.

That said, the feature request is still being looked into by our team, so I’ve added your feedback to the request.

    Hi Joey
Thanks for this. It looks potentially usable. I’ll have to play around more with the Up Next, Auto Download and this Autoplay function. Seems a balancing act. I don’t always agree with the choice the app makes for my next listen and we end up fighting it out. I suspect, like most people, I don’t listen to all podcasts the same way.
In general I have found the podcast controls in the app to be less than intuitive and a little hard to navigate. Maybe just getting used to a new way of thinking.
    Cheers

The fact that the episode sort order is not configurable for podcasts is a major irritant for me. I shouldn’t have to jump through hoops, adding them to a “next up” queue and only then sorting them.

Plus subscription cancelled (unfortunately too late to receive a refund).

  • @dodgedeboulet you can sort episodes from a Podcast’s details screen. At the top of the list of episodes, tap on the three dot menu, and you can find the “Sort Episodes” option.

Here’s a screenshot to help with this:

So you can get the episodes sorted the way you’d like — oldest to newest, for example — and then utilize Autoplay to automatically play episodes in the order they were released. But if that doesn’t quite accomplish your goals, please let us know!

While it would seem that this is an obvious solution to the issue, locating that specific setting is torturous if you’re already playing an episode. And given that this thread exists (and has for a while), others have encountered the same challenge.

Perhaps you could modify the behavior of the “back” button to return to the episode list rather than having to poke around the the current episode’s “Playing” screen until you accidentally hit the greyed-out podcast title just above the progress bar? That’s the only way I’ve been able to get there. Unplayed podcasts show the episode list once selected, but once you’ve started listening, getting back to the list is not immediately obvious.

That said, I’ve joined the Republic so you don’t need to do this for me.

Do you mean you’ve migrated to a different podcast player? If so, was it the sequential playback functionality in Pocket Casts that was the deal breaker or was there something else that had you looking to switch? I’d be happy to forward that feedback along to our team.

The main issue is that I found PocketCast’s navigation less than intuitive. Getting to the episode list for a podcast was the last straw; if there had been an “Episodes” tab at the top of the podcast’s “Playing” screen I might have found the sort option on my own.

I’ve switched to Podcast Republic and it suits my needs very nicely. It also offers a one-time purchase instead of a subscription, which I prefer.

  • @dodgedeboulet thank you for sharing your feedback on this. I’ll forward this along to our team so we can improve the app experience going forward. If you ever decide to give Pocket Casts a go again and have any other questions, please let us know — we’re always happy to help!
