Need help resetting/deleting my account but not my app settings

I don’t know what my best course of action is so I’m just going to explain my situation.

I was paying for Spotify but hated the app and wanted to transfer all my subscriptions and podcasts I listened to from Spotify to Pocket Casts So I found a very rudimentary python script that transferred episodes listened and subscriptions, but only checked the podcasts i was subscribed to, and I didn’t know that. So I asked Spotify to send me my extended listening history, I received it a few days later and I subscribed to every podcast that I’ve listened at least one episode of.

Long story short, the script messed up and I later found a better script so I wanted to erase all my listened podcasts and my subscriptions and transfer them from Spotify again while still keeping as many as my settings as possible.

What should I do? Would changing my email and making a new account on the same device work? If I delete my account and then create s new one, will the settings stick?

  • Deleting your account will delete everything, including settings, but it is probably the best way to set your account up when migrating.

Which script are you using? Knowing how users migrate their data to Pocket Casts would be interesting.

Yeah ok, I guess I’ll screenrecord all my settings and make a new one :(

I’m using this one I found on GitHub (seems to be the only one): https://github.com/rv3392/spotify-to-pocketcasts

The README is out of date and incorrect and the developer hasn’t touched it since first releasing it. I found a pull request from a few years ago that was never merged which fixes the issue of podcasts with the same name, so I’ll use that one.

(As a side note, is there a plan to make Pocket Casts settings, except download settings, sync on different devices? I thought they were synced, so a week before changing my phone I went through every setting and then lost them all a week later.)

Edit: the new script is somehow even worse than the old one, it gets the number of episodes played in a podcast right, but the episodes are wrong

@geekygecko What else can I do to switch from Spotify? All I care about moving is the listening status of my episodes, nothing else. Is there any other way I can switch? I’ve listened to around 800 episodes

  • it gets the number of episodes played in a podcast right, but the episodes are wrong

What’s wrong with the episodes? The playback position? I have only done a little bit of Python but might be able to look at what’s going wrong with the script. What’s the old script?

First of all, it says about a third/half of the podcasts have 0 played episodes, but if you run it again it might say the correct number for the same podcast and 0 for others. The podcasts it thinks have zero played episodes are usually consecutive.

When there is a number of episodes, it’s correct. The issue is the podcast episodes it marks as played sometimes haven’t actually been played, and vice versa.

The old script is the “official” one last edited by the creator, while the “new one” is the only pull request that tries to fix episodes not being marked as played because there are 2 podcasts with the same name.

I have no idea if the official script worked better or worse, button I didn’t notice the same amount of wrong played episodes

In the meantime I have fully transferred my account manually using the Pocket Casts premium 1-month free offer for the web version, notepad++, and the spotify app. Took about 6 hours

(Oh and somehow Spotify has deleted my parent’s Premium Duo account and he can’t create a new one nor receive a password reset email. He’s also interested in switching haha)

  • Thanks for sending us those details. I would like to improve the Spotify import. Hopefully, I can find some time to look at this soon.

  • I have started working on improving the existing script you used. I hope to have it available to try next week. Once it’s available, would you mind running the improved script to see if I have helped? It also outputs extra debug logs, so if there are issues matching podcasts or episodes, I should be able to improve the script. I could create a test Pocket Casts account so you wouldn’t have to mess with the hard work you did manually copying over your changes.

It would be great to improve this process to help others switch from Spotify. Eventually, I would like to include this feature in the apps rather than as a script, but this feels like a good starting point.

That’s great! I love the idea of it being available as a feature in the app. But I don’t think I really want to go back to using the script again after all the time I spent with it. Maybe you could create a test Spotify account and I could send you the list of podcasts I had tried it with so you can try marking some episodes as played and see if it works.

This was the first time I ever ran a python script, let alone write one. Since you’re the one improving the script, I think you could have much more insight than me if you were also the one testing it.

  • I have a Spotify account to test with so your list of podcasts would be great, thanks. Would you mind sending me an OPML of your podcasts, or a podcast list from Pocket Casts? Can contact you by email to keep it private?

Hey, sorry for the late reply. On my current account, I have removed most of the podcasts I had temporarily subscribed to to help the script, but I have all of them on my Galaxy Note 9, which was automatically logged out when I changed my password. I tried exporting my subscriptions as an OPML file, but clicking on the options immediately crashes the app (tried restarting phone & clearing cache – not sure if i should report it as a bug). But the podcast list from Pocket Casts did work, and so did the file download :D

I like keeping my email address outside of the public eye, and there doesn’t seem to be a DM feature in these forums, so I’d like to send the link & file to your email address if that’s not an issue.

Also, I forgot to mention that the second (newest) script and maybe also the older one stopped working after getting to certain specific podcasts. Once I unsubscribed from them, the script was able to keep going.

  • @favifake we will send an email through to you to request the information from you :)
