New episode for podcast with “Add to Up Next” aren’t if Up Next is empty

I’ve just recently started to hit an empty Up Next queue, and whenever I do any new auto-downloaded episodes for podcasts that have “Add to Up Next” enabled are not added to Up Next or auto-played. From what I’ve gathered from other questions in this forum, I would assume that this is because there technically isn’t any Up Next queue at that point, and I can definitely see that distinction. However, from a UX perspective, this is very inconsistent behavior as whether or not I need to take any action when I get a notification about a new episode depends on whether or not my queue is empty. I would much prefer a behavior where, regardless of Up Next being empty or not when a new episode is downloaded, I could just launch the app and hit play when I want to listen. Now I need to have notifications for new episodes and manually check each time whether or not it’s ready to go for whenever I’m next going to listen.

You’re exactly right too on why the app behaves that way. But, I see your point on this one. It would make sense to create an Up Next list in these cases. I’ve shared your words here with our team for further consideration as we look to improve how the app works.
