Next episode button

Hello
Is it a big problem to add next episode button to pocket casts on lock screen?
Best regards !

Hi there, @biz1948e78b772b
Can you please elaborate on the use case for such a feature? We can then log it to our ideas board :)

I’ll elaborate. For those that listen to their playlist while their hands are busy (e.g., at the gym), the only way to skip to the next episode is to tap their earbud 1000 times for fast forward. To make it worse, if you wear certain make/models of digital watches to move to the next episode (in my case, a Samsung Watch with Pixel phone on Android), the controls only move to the next episode about 10% of the time. Pressing episodes on the playlist in my watchi UI mostly doesn’t work. If my watch does actually work and I forget to mark the last episode as played—the issue happens all over again as the episide is at the top of playlist again. For those that have busy hands, our phones are stowed somewhere. In my case, a gymbag, and its extremely inconvenient to have to pull my phone out every time I want to (easily) skip to the next episode.
For me, this makes PocketCast almost useless as I frequently skip episodes. Other apps support Next / Previous episode with custom button controls in thier apps like BeyondPod (no longer maintained), Podcast Addict among others.
Here are the features I’d like:
1–allow the user to set what they want their taps and long presses to do by left or right ear preferrably. If each ear can’t be customized, then simple tap controls will work. Here are examples:
Provide earbud/button options: 1 tap, 2 taps, long press
Allow user to assign functions to the button # of presses they want:
A-forward n-seconds
B-backward n-seconds
C-next episode in playlist (it could automatically be mark as played, moved to the bottom of the playlist, or make it a setting where the user can choose. For my use case, I’d want the skipped episode to be moved to the bottom of the playlist)
D-previous episode in playist
E-Pause/Play toggle
** BONUS **
F-Decrease playback speed
G-Increase playback speed
H-Star/Keep episode
2[Optional]–Provide earbud integration apps. For example the Sony “Headphone” app allows partner apps to be installed. A PocketApps app could override the media controls here.
I am a coder myself, and this feature doesn’t seem to be a huge code lift. If anything, the challenge my be device compatibility, but even if it’s not compatible for all devices–it’d still be a godesend for those it works with.
Thank you for listening. I hope you can help.

P.S. my optimal button config is: 1 tap: toggle play/pause, 2 taps: next episode, and 3 taps: fast forward n seconds

Thanks for the great feedback, @steaphana9b123b76e!
We have added it to our ideas board for consideration :)

Our mobile apps are open-source, so feel free to contribute towards the development of our app if possible :)

@staff-joey8 I was going to mention that, in meantime, there is an option to switch the headphone skip forward action to skipping to the next episode instead of seeking forward, but that seems to be gone and the options are only adding a bookmark and skipping forward and backward in time and chapters. Why was this removed?

I’d like to add my request for a skip to end or skip to next button feature. In my case, I often listen to podcasts while driving. Sometimes a podcast has an episode in which I am not interested. Of course, I find this out while the episode is playing and I am behind the road. As already mentioned, skip to end/next is also impractical while working out. Please add this feature.
