Noise and hissing sounds
-
I love the pocketcast app, but i’m experiencing increasingly loud hissing noises while playing episodes of several podcasts. So loud and annoying that it’s preventing me from using the app. So now, every morning i check Pocketcast for new episodes and proceed to listen to them on Spotify, where they all sound just fine. I thought it had something to do with my phone, but i have a new one for a couple of days but the noise is still there …
I don’t think it has something to do with the pocketcast app, because the problem started when in the last month of using Google Podcast on one specific podcast. I even sent them an e-mail about the issue, but they assured me that their audio output was excellent and when i listened on Spotify it sounded great. Since then, the noise and interference only got worse. It’s not an hardware issue, the noise is the same on headphones or speakers, internal, wired or bluetooth.
I suspect it is some settings issue, because of which the wrong codec is used or some extreme data saving mode is activated. Some podcasts play just fine or have minor issues but others are just unlistenable …
I’ve tried everything, re-installed the app, logging in with a new account, even changing the audio settings in Android developer mode. Nothing works.
I really love the pocketcast app, i still use it to find podcasts and subscribe. The user interface is so much better than others.
Could you please have a look? I’m a real podcast fan, i’ve listened to thousands of pods in the last 10 years and would love to do so on Pocketcast.

Hi there, @jeroenvanderlippe
If the podcast is publicly accessible, could you share the share link of it here with us?
Also, let us know what device you are using to listen to the podcast, and if you have any playback settings like Volume Boost/PlayBack Speed adjusted?

Hey I can confirm I have the same problem . Generally, it happens when I’m streaming a new episode of a podcast via cell data while I’m driving. It’s the loudest most “holy f@#$” noise I’ve ever heard. If I rewind 30 seconds, it will happen again at the same exact point, but if I wait a while or listen 10 or so minutes further into the episode, the issue is not replicable.
The noise is usually within the first ten minutes of a podcast and it has a similar vibe / timing to that glitch where a podcast would randomly skip or loop back. Happens the most often on “The Daily Show: Ears Edition” and “On the Media” for me.
This is new in the last two or so months. It’s scared the absolute hell out of me at least ten times now. I’ve been on pocketcasts since the app started, and I’d rather not change apps.
I’m on android, a Pixel 6, with no special options like trim or playback speed enabled. Also based in Phoenix, if it has anything to do with dynamic ads (which are hilariously always in Spanish).

Thank you for taking the time to reply!
This is the one where I experience the worst hissing sounds: https://podcastluisteren.nl/embed/Maarten-van-Rossem-De-Podcast-Election-Day
When i listen to the pod via this link, it sounds fine, no hisses or squeeks. But when I listen to it in Pocketcast it’s quite bad. I also tried to listen to last episodes of the Brian Windhorst & the Hoop Collective and of the Autosport F1 podcast. And there i can also hear some squeaks, but not as bad. It seems te be worse with some specific voices.
Strange thing is that I just played the last episode of Dateline in Pocketcast and it sounded fine. Same with ‘Criminal’ and all advertisements; they sound great as well.
All playback settings are in default mode.

Hi!
In order to isolate the root of the problem and given so far we have not been able to reproduce this issue on our side, it would be great if someone still having this problem could try to play these problematic episodes in a different device, and even better if it could be on a different platform. For example, a computer using our Web Player, or an iOS device, etc. It would be great as well if those devices were connected to the same network (if that’s a WiFi for example).
This way we’ll be able to narrow down the problem to an Android specific issue, or to a problem with the actual audio file that’s being served in your region.
Thanks a lot for your help investigating this issue.
