Parse Chapters from Show Notes

I love the feature of Chapters. But in my opinion the method parsing the chapters from the audio-files is a good automatic idea but the problem is that most podcast platform don’t support it so podcast hosts won’t do it. What i discovered that e.g. Spotify can parse the chapters from the show notes like YouTube does it too. Therefore, they can be added later (if they edit the show notes).

This feature would be very nice (and simple way for the hosts) to add chapters in a way they already are familiar with (because of YouTube).

Love to hear, what your opinions on this are. From a technical perspective, I don’t think this would be too hard to implement.

(Love from a Pocket Casts Champion, from the early beginnings)

  • Hi @radiantheart0c4e941377 – We already have an internal feature request for this, so I’ve added your vote and your feedback there. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thank you very much for that quick answer :)

Hey, I was wondering about the current status of this feature. As a creator, I always embed the chapter marks in the mp3 file (as one should do), but I listen to some podcasts that put the chapter marks only in the podcast’s description, so the proposed new feature would be handy for me!

  • Thanks for the feedback, @lennart90! The best option is to have the podcast creator add the chapter information if possible. You can learn more about how Pocket Casts manages chapters in this guide.

Could you share a link to an episode as an example? That way I can test and see if I get the timestamps or not. Thank you!

Here are two links to episodes which have time codes to the chapters in their description, but not embedded in the mp3 (or sourced via Podlove and the Podcast Index):

    1. https://pca.st/80e9alvj
    2. https://pca.st/zanpy25x

So, both of them list the time codes to the chapters in their description. Pocket Casts recognizes them and makes them clickable: I can click on the time while playing an episode, and the app will jump to the time.

However, what I would love to have as a feature is for Pocket Casts to also interpret these time codes as actual chapters and make them work just like other chapters directly embedded within the mp3 file (or directly sourced).

  • Thanks for clarifying and sharing examples, @lennart90! Converting time codes in the episode notes into actual chapters isn’t something we support yet. I’ll make sure to add a vote for it on your behalf, however, in the report where we are tracking demand for this.

+1 please. Here is an example of a podcast that has timestamps in the show notes. It would be great if PC recognised this as chapter markers so i can use the preselect chapter function and just listen to chapters I want to. (I already pay for Plus).

I wasnt sure what the need for embedding into the mp3 is, I just thought PC could use the timestamps without having to alter the mp3 file, but perhaps I’m not fully understanding what other people have said above. Thank you
