Pausing reverts to radio in Android Auto

I’m seeing an issue when using Picket Casts with Android Auto. The app itself works fine, and playback is no problem. But whenever I pause an episode, it switches the audio source back to the radio instead of just pausing, almost like it’s disconnected AA from the car – though it never drops the AA interface. This only happens with PocketCasts, so I don’t think it’s likely to be a system issue

  • Hi, @rma1979! Have you noticed if this issue only started recently?

Also, can you share with me the following information?

    • The OS version on your device – you can usually find this from your phone’s Settings
    • Your Pocket Casts app version – you can see this from the Pocket Casts app’s Profile > Settings (gear icon) > About

Sorry to bump this but I have the same issue. I’ve recently moved from Google podcasts and only pocketcasts has this issue. All other audio apps pause, and keep the app loaded in AA, allowing me to unpause it. With pocket cast I pause then 5 seconds later the radio takes over.

phone is S24 with Android 14

    pocketcasts is 7.58 (9197)

That is odd that it only happens with Pocket Casts. Can you let us know if you’re streaming or have downloaded the episode you were playing when this happens?

I would like to add to this. I’m having the same problem. Having just moved from Google podcast I really like Pocket Cast except for this bug.

Happens with both streaming and downloaded podcasts. Pocket cast is the only audio app that does this. The app is still active on android auto and instantly resumes if I press play, but when I unmute the car radio takes over.

  • @writerwilke and @craggsy Thanks for reporting! We’ve now asked the developers to look into it.

I am also having this issue, but I’ve noticed that it says paused until I receive a notification that makes a alert sound…like a text message. As soon as the alert sound ends, it switches to the radio. And I don’t know if it’s the same for everyone, but my radio is much louder than sound coming from my phone (Pocket Casts or youtube music or other music/podcast apps)…so I set my radio at volume 20, but if I’m listing to something over Android Audio, I need to set Volume to like 45..and when this issue happens, it is deafening and startles everyone as I have to quickly find the mute button in my car.

  • @rma1979, @craggsy, and @writerwilke I’ll be emailing you so we can get app logs from your device to troubleshoot this issue further. Please keep an eye out for my message.

@ericzierdt We already have an open email thread with you, and we’ll continue there.

I’ve replied to the second email I received, I never got the first one.
Looking at the logs (I went and tested it today to make sure), it seems when paused PC is giving up audio player rights. I’ve emailed the full log to the support email, but its just what is shown below over and over, when I pause/mute then resume.

    I 25/4 15:07:52 startForeground state: 3
I 25/4 15:07:59 Event from Media Session to pause. Controller: com.google.android.projection.gearhead pid: 9767 uid: 10221

I 25/4 15:08:08 Not enough time passed since this episode was last paused, no time adjustment required

  • Thanks for that, @craggsy!

We’ve filed a bug report for this matter here. We hope to have this sorted soon :)

sorry to resurrect and old thread, but I have this issue as well. Pause only lasts for about 5 seconds then a quick loud blast from the radio, and the podcast begins playing at normal volume.

As with others, this is a unique “feature” to pocketcasts and does not happen with Spotify when I pause music.

Any update on this? This still happens every time I pause pocketcast. The radio will take over after a few seconds. Doesn’t happen with any other android auto audio app.

    little more detail:

if I pause within android auto, after about 5 seconds I get a quick loud radio blast then the podcast resumes

if I pause within the application on the phone, after about 5 seconds the radio starts, and continues to play

if I then go back to AA and start the podcast, then pause it, after five seconds it goes to radio only

  • @craggsy It doesn’t look like there are any updates yet, but we will ask the developers again.

@thedanfinn I’ll be emailing you to get some logs from your app.
