Pausing When Using AirPlay
-
When I am playing from my iPad (iPadOS 18.2 beta, though this has also occurred with 18.1) to my Mac (MacOS 15.1) using AirPlay, the audio randomly cuts out, but looks like it’s continuing to play. When I pause and play again, it returns to the position from before it froze and appears to continue to play, but I still can’t hear anything. It doesn’t start actually playing audio until I fast forward or rewind, only to cut out a few seconds later. Sometimes this starts happening after not much listening, and sometimes it can take a while (multiple episodes, even). I am unable to get a screen recording at the time of writing, but I will provide one as soon as I can.

Could we know what device you Airplay to? Could you test using other Airplay or Bluetooth devices to see if the same issue persists?

I am AirPlaying to a MacBook Pro. I have not had any issues with Bluetooth speakers or headphones and I have tried turning on legacy Bluetooth support. I’ll try playing to my TV.

Same issue when airplaying from the pocketcasts app on iPhone mini13 to an airplay-enabled Sonos component (SonosOne). Was tune up until 2 weeks or so ago.
Connects for a few seconds with audio broadcasts on pocketcasts iPhone app to Sonos, then connection seems to go in & out every 5 seconds or so. You can see the connection (between iPhone & Sonos via airplay) itself is what’s failing as the PLAY/PAUSE button on the Sonos interface changes between the play ▶️ and pause ⏸️ buttons in line with the momentary plays/pauses in audio. Just seems like the connection is not “locking in”.
And yes it’s specifically a pocketcasts problem, all other audio apps (Apple Music, YouTube, even browser pages with audio) are airplaying to Sonos hiccup-free -
I’m also having the same issue, was working perfectly all day Friday, then as of first thing Monday morning, plays for a few seconds then stops then restarts then stops etc.
All other apps with Airplay work fine its just Pocketcasts.I have reset phone, reset receiver and reset network.
Iphone 14 IOS 17.7 to Yamaha WXA50.

I am also having this same issue – I think it might be to do with the latest update containing the “new streaming solution” that was introduced to fix an issue with streams skipping around. When I download the episodes they’re fine via AirPlay but streaming them causes this regularly pausing via AirPlay (only).
-
Yup, all sounds like the same issue. For those of us that do not want to clog our phone’s storage with downloaded podcast episodes, kindly fix/revert to however the airplay mechanism was pushing streamed audio from source devices (iPhones, MacBooks, iPads, etc) to end sources (Sonos, airplay-enabled TVs, etc) literally 2 weeks ago — it was just fine. The audio skips every 3 seconds & is rendering it completely unlistenable. Sigh.
The native pocketcasts app on Sonos is also useless now (no longer supports bookmarking across devices), but I believe that fault falls on Sonos & their dreadful app redesign/rollout a couple mos ago. They still haven’t begun to fix that 🙃

Thanks for the download tip, it does work if you download the episode first. Its not ideal, but it’s something until the issue is (hopefully) sorted out properly.

I have the same issue when using AirPlay but only on my iPhone; my iPad isn’t having the problem. I first noticed this yesterday, 11/17. Audio pauses and plays again every few seconds, and the playback icon changes from Play to Pause repeatedly.
I’m assuming maybe my iPhone and iPad are on different versions of Pocket Casts, but iOS makes it somewhat hard to tell what version of an app you’re on. No other apps have this issue.

Since devs previously asked what device folks were AirPlaying to — I’m AirPlaying to my HomePod mini devices. I think I have about 9 of them and it doesn’t matter which one I AirPlay to, they all do the same thing. Since someone else mentioned Sonos, I don’t think it’s a target-specific issue.

Same issue here:
- AirPlay to Sonos speakers rapidly connects and disconnects, creating dropouts every second or so
- AirPlay from every other app/source works fine
- Restarting app/phone/network has no effect, nor did iOS 18.0.1 vs iOS 18.1
- Working fine until a recent release
- Downloading the episode makes the problem go away

The same thing is happening to me with PocketCasts on an iPhone 16 Pro, latest OS. When streaming it plays fine just through the phone speakers but as soon as I throw it to either my HomePod or Sonos speakers (or both), it starts cycling automatically between play and pause, every other second or so. I took a screen grab that just shows the play/pause cycling (turned off audio for the upload but it’s as annoying as it sounds):

I’m having the same issue with iphone 15 pro running 18.1. If I airplay to any device in my home I have the same cycling between play and pause. Might be time for a new podcast app…

We are currently tracking an issue in regards to Airplay and Pocket Casts 7.76.1. We are tracking the issue here:

I don’t believe there was an app update since Sunday evening, but the airplay play/pause issue to Sonos seems to have resolved…🤞🏼

@shadowport88 @davidbcc7885e63 Thanks for the confirmation! Our team is hard at work looking into this issue and pushing the changes from the server side.

Seems to have resolved for me too, expected the fix to have to come via an App Store update, but fair enough!
