Playback Effects – Speed Jumps to x1.5 (iOS)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Dear Community,

While listening to podcasts the playback speed randomly jumps to x1.5. I listen at x1 speed. Yet, usually after pausing and resuming the playback, for no good reason and unpredictably, the speed jumps up to, say, x1.5 speed. It doesn’t happen 100% of the time so it isn’t reproducible on-demand. All I can say that it seems associated with pausing and resuming playback and perhaps also while my phone is connected to some bluetooth or airplay device.

I don’t recall it happening while the episode is actually playing, only when there’s a pause and resumption. I see others outside of this forum have discussed this issue so I’m surprised that nobody has yet mentioned it on this forum.

Anyway, is anyone experiencing this issue?

Version info: Pocket Casts iOS v7.50

    iOS version: 16.7.2

  • Hi, @tommyrot9e0c9208ac! It’s possible that you might have set playback speed settings for a single podcast/show.

To check whether that’s the case, do you notice if playback only speeds up for episodes from a certain podcast/show? If so, please go to Podcasts > the podcast’s page > Settings (gear icon) and check the Playback Effects settings for the podcast.

Also, kindly update your iOS app to the latest version available here. As of today, that’s version 7.54.

    Hi Cara,

All my podcasts are set to normal playback speed. I only ever listen at x1 speed. (As the producers intended.)

As for updating to iOS 7.5.4, no thank you. My existing version of iOS is supported by Pocket Casts.

The issue still persists, so I look forward to support. Thanks in advance.

@tommyrot9e0c9208ac Apologies if it wasn’t clear! Please update your Pocket Casts iOS app to the latest version available (currently version 7.54).

When you started the thread, you were still using version 7.50 of our iOS app, and we want to rule out that the issues you’re experiencing are from running an outdated version of our app.

Please let us know how that goes!

    Hi Cara,

Stupid of me – I should’ve realised you were suggesting updating the Pocket Casts app, not iOS (which is now on iOS17.x). I’ve updated Pocket Casts to 7.5.4, but from what I can tell, there’s no discernible difference. No surprise really because there was no mention in the release notes of any fixes to the issue I’m reporting. (Support teams insist on recommending that people update to the latest version even though previous app versions are officially still supported and when there’s nothing in the release notes specifying the issue is fixed. It’s a ‘Pray it Goes Away’ strategy.)

    Kind regards

    T

  • Checking app versions is a default part of our initial troubleshooting, so thanks for updating, @tommyrot9e0c9208ac! We aren’t able to include all changes in release notes too, so it’s good to cover all our bases.

To help us look into this further, can you let us know if you, by chance, use an Apple Watch with Pocket Casts?

You also mentioned only noticing the issue so far when your phone is connected to a Bluetooth or AirPlay device. Which devices might those be exactly?

“We aren’t able to include all changes in release notes.”

You really should. Ever since tech firms realised ambiguous release notes like “UI improvements and bug fixes” not only saved them time writing release notes but it actually lead to more updates, it marked the death of useful release notes. It’s part of the dark patterns that have taken root, sadly.

Back to the topic, I do indeed use an Apple Watch with Pocket Casts. The issue occurs when I might be connected to headphones. I have tried a few pairs – it happens on all of them, but it also happens when I’m connected to wired headphones (using a lightning–headphone adapter.)

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Support,

I can confirm that speed jumps (from 1.0x to 1.5x) also occur when Airplaying content from Pocket Casts.

10 days after my last post, is there any movement on the this topic please? This is proving happening so frequently that I may have to switch apps.

  • @tommyrot9e0c9208ac I just asked the developers for an update. We’ll let you know as soon as we hear back.
