Playback Speed Randomly Increasing

We recently had the following message sent to us by a user:
While listening to podcasts the playback speed randomly jumps to playback. I listen at x1 speed. Yet, usually after pausing and resuming the playback, for no good reason and unpredictably, the speed jumps up to, say, x1.5 speed. It doesn’t always happen so isn’t reproducible on-demand. Yet, I can say that it is associated with pausing and resuming playback. I don’t recall it happening while the episode is actually playing. I see others online have discussed this issue. I trust that by submitting this report via the PocketCasts app you have all the version info you need.

Although I mentioned that it’s unpredictable and not possible to reproduce the error on demand, I’d like to add that the evidence building for me is that jump in playback speed seems associated with bluetooth/airplay connectivity. I have noticed that this issue tends to occur when playback is paused and resumed and/or the audio destination (bluetooth/airplay) is changed.
As a first step for troubleshooting, we always check that a device is running the latest version of the app. This is because we include various fixes with the releases, and we want to make sure an issue isn’t one we have already addressed.
Next, if the app is up-to-date, but the issue persists, how is playback paused/resumed? Is it using a Bluetooth device, like buttons on earbuds, for example?

It took me a little while to realise this was happening to me. I listen to the Critical Role podcast in my car via Android Auto. I was getting annoyed as it seemed like they had randomly increased the speed of the intro song but it turns out this was just where I noticed it first. A few episodes (and weeks later) I notice the voices have increased now too and the intro is lightning speed. I finally open the app on my phone and dig around for playback speed. It’s at 1.4x. I definitely didn’t do this myself. And it Both app and Android auto are on latest versions.

Did you hit pause and then play again on the episode when you noticed the speed had increased? Did you use Android Auto or your phone to pause and resume?
Did you connect your phone to your car’s Android Auto using Bluetooth? If possible, please try connecting it with a wire and see if you still have this issue.
Lastly, would you mind sharing the make and model of your phone? Please also share the Android version of it. Thanks!
