Player frequently unresponsive and nearly UNUSABLE in the past few days
-
Yes having the same frustrating problems for the past week or so. I’m using a Galaxy S22 Ultra.
-
Also having this issue since some time around the 3rd or 4th of September on an S10+ on Android 12 with version 7.46. Here is a video of the behavior that everyone is describing.
-
Thank you for the video @dustinsnydercd600ff239!
Unfortunately, we’re still stuck on approval from Google to roll out the fix to everyone.
If your app version is
7.46, you might want to try outapp-7.46.1.apkon our GitHub releases page. Also, are there any
7.47beta candidates who is experiencing this issue? -
The video above at :17 seconds shows exactly what I experienced and wrote of on September 5th. Pressing one of the badges would leave a black middle section with top half colored with a hue that seemed to relate to the color of the badge. Further attempts made things worse until Pocket Casts finally become totally non-responsive. I’m happy to report that my issues have not returned since they cleared up earlier this week but I feel for everyone else who is experiencing this problem.
-
Glad to hear a new version is in the pipeline. FWIW, I think the issue is network related. My IPv6 connectivity from my telco is pretty bad (it doesn’t handle big frames properly), and I think that’s why it is stuck “refreshing”. When I turn on VPN tunneling with fully working IPv6, Pocket Casts works for me in 7.46, too.

Found an earlier apk (7.44) from an apk site, uninstalled the current version and replaced it with that. Lo and behold – back to being able to listen to podcasts.
Interestingly, I found 7.46.1 tho it’s not available in my region yet. Tried that – and podcasts were perma-buffering. Defs not working still.
-
Strangely, it has been working for me for a few days. I did not do anything actively to fix it. Cannot explain.
-
app-7.46.1worked for about a day. This morning I opened it and back to the same issue as reported last week. Still on that same version. -
Found an earlier apk (7.44) from an apk site…
FYI, you can find all our releases on GitHub at https://github.com/Automattic/pocket-casts-android/releases. Those are the same apks we submit to Google, so getting them from there avoids any risk that someone might have tampered with the apk and uploaded it to some other site.

Basically a me too.
Android Player v7.46
Phone Pixel Pro7
OS: Fully patched Android 13Since the latest release I’ve been having issues when opening the app:
* simply getting a listing of pods – multiple times this weekend my filters won’t list they’re just blank
* download most recent pods – I suspect a variant of the above, new pods appear but are not playable. After force stopping the app and re-starting they download
* controlling the current pod – this morning although I could start the pod via my buds I couldn’t scroll back or control with the app until a force stopNothing in my infrastructure has changed over the last month or more.
I download all my pods on wifi for later listening.
It *feels* like the player has started talking to Automattic’s servers, times out, and dies rather than moving on and playing the pod -
Add me to this list of users having issues. Pixel 6 Pro, Android 14, Build UPB5.230623.009
My ppodcast plays for 1 sec, then off. Hit play, 1sec, then off.

Interestingly, i have the same issue. But when i plug phone into power it all works!.
look forward to the new version for a fix

A quick update on this Android app freezing issue: v7.46.2 is still stuck in review with Google, and taking longer than usual to be approved.
If you’re comfortable installing the app apk with the fix directly on your phone instead of an automatic update, here’s the download link: https://github.com/Automattic/pocket-casts-android/releases/tag/7.47-rc-2 from the app’s official GitHub releases page.
We appreciate your patience and understanding while we get this resolved for you. 🙏
-
I installed the apk directly and so far so good. The app worked intermittently before so we’ll see if the update is consistently working.
-
Has Google provided an estimated timeline of when the update might be available? Trying to decide if this non-techie should take the time to figure out how to install apk or just wait it out (I miss my podcasts!! :)). Thanks.
-
Chiming in to note that this issue is still continuing for me as it has for more than a week.
-
Google has approved
7.46.2, and it is starting to roll out, so you should see it in the next day or two as long as there aren’t any issues with the rollout. Please let us know how it goes with the new version, particularly if you continue to have problems. -
@mattchowning This is NOT fixed in 7.46.2 as far as I can tell. I just updated, and I am still having the app freezing behavior.

Here’s a video of the freezing behavior https://youtu.be/V4E0m-bKWIc?si=qcGyu9-h1on1b867

Thanks for letting us know and providing the video @alberge. That’s very helpful.
- Does the issue still occur when your phone is in airplane mode?
- How often does the issue occur? Are you sometimes able to use the app fine, but not other times, or does it happen anytime you use the app?
- Is there anything in particular that seems to make it more or less likely for the app to lock-up?
