Playing podcasts from a filter in android auto?

I’m sure this is simple, but I’m struggling to get my head around some of the options in the app across my tablet and android auto in the car.
    Basically I want to;

    1. Select my favourite podcasts
    2. create a filter to select all the unplayed podcasts from them, and sort them in oldest first order
    3. as new podcasts are released, get these added to the filter automatically
    4. play them in the car one after the other without having to select the next podcast, basically setup and forget!

In the car I can select the filter I created on my tablet, then tap on the first podcast in the list (oldest podcast) to play it. But not sure if it will move to the next podcast, as I see sometimes it adds new podcasts to “up next” on my tablet instead of showing the podcasts from the filter.
So do the android auto and tablet versions of the app work differently?

I have setup the filter and can see steps 1-3 working fine, but am struggling to see how the filter gets used to select podcasts instead of up next.

sorry this seems like a noob question, but maybe just confusing myself by using both apps at once.

Hmmm Not many people using android auto app?

Anyway, after some poking around have got this semi working, so posting here for others struggling like me.

On my tablet I went into the filter I created to select all unplayed podcasts, and sort then oldest first, then selected them all and used the “play next” option to add them all to the “Up next” playlist.

Thankfully this was then replicated in the car app, and it also preserved the play order (oldest first). I’ve tested this and it does indeed play the next podcast from the list.

Still not sure if it will add new podcasts automatically, or will I have to repeat this process every few weeks to update the “up next” queue, so we’ll see.

  • Hi there!  I’m sorry for the delay here, I see my reply didn’t save properly. I’m posting it again –

Thanks for trying out Pocket Casts on your Andriod Auto too!  Since the automotive app is designed to reduce distracting driving, there are some differences with the user interface compared to the mobile app.

It sounds like you’ve gotten a Filter setup already. You can certainly create a filter and include only specific podcasts. If you view one of the Filters in the mobile device, click on the three vertical dots at the top right to view more options. From there you can select Play all to clear out the Up Next queue and replace it with the podcasts in the Filter.  Episodes in the Up Next queue are played one after another.

While podcasts will get added automatically to the Filter based on the release date chosen, once they are played, they will be out of the Up Next queue. You will need to later add the new episodes again to the queue.

If you start playing content from the Up Next queue, the episodes will continue playing automatically even while in the vehicle.

how the filter gets used to select podcasts instead of up next.

Do you mean how you can limit a filter to only specific podcast?  When you create a filter, you can select Filter by Podcasts. Then select individual podcasts from the list.  If you meant something else let me know so I can get the correct information to you.

In the car I can select the filter I created on my tablet, then tap on the first podcast in the list (oldest podcast) to play it.

It sounds like you are trying to rearrange the podcast episode playback order. Inside the Filter, click the three vertical dots (mobile) to view more options. Click “Sort by” then select Oldest to Newest. After that, select “Play All” to send those episodes into the Up Next queue to play one after another automatically.

I hope this helps point you in the right direction.  Let me know if you need help with anything else.

Hi, Thank you for your response, and apologies for my rambling original question. ;)

In simple terms I was just trying to select my favourite podcasts and play episiodes oldest first order across all the podcasts. So I get some variety on long drives and not just the same podcast one after another. I’d setup the filter, and could get the list of podcasts OK, but was struggling to see how to make the whole list play as I was tapping on the first podcast in the filter and expecting it to automatically go to the next in the filter when it finished.

What I’d failed to appreciate was what you said in your response, that selecting “Play All” adds all of the podcasts from the filter to “Up Next”, and from there they will inded play one after the other automatically. Thankfully doing this also seems to preserve the Oldest first play order as well.

I’d also realised, as you say, that I’ll have to repeat this process every few weeks, as new podcasts are added to the filter, but not copied to “Up next”, but thats not the end of the world.

    Many thanks.

  • Hi @inquisitively1ae07eab03,

Great to hear you’ve figured it out! It sounds like you’re all set, so I’ll mark this resolved. But if you have any further questions or run into any other issues, feel free to reopen this thread.
