Playlist Sort Order

I was excited to see playlists coming, but it did not add the feature that I was hoping. For playlist or filter, there are only two ways to sort the podcasts that are automatically added — either by date or by size. Can you consider adding an option to select a custom order based on podcast name?

I have my Morning Drive and Evening Drive podcast playlist/filter. I limit them to a 24 hour release date so I get the most up to date podcast in the list. Rather than sorting by date or size, I would rather have the sequence be by name (i.e Podcast C, Podcast A, Podcast D, etc.) As a result, I have to use my carPlay interface to manually select the sequence rather then starting at the top and just sequentially playing them.

    Thank you.

Agreed we urgently need more sorting options.

@ffrotell Could you share a bit more about what you had in mind for this? Were you thinking that you could setup a custom priority order for a Playlist, so that (with your example), episodes from Podcast C would always be listed before Podcast A, followed by Podcast D? Or were you thinking of some other sorting method and I misunderstood?

Sorry. I had to use a different account because WordPress somehow messed up my 2FA and I can’t get into the original one. I also don’t have the back-up codes. I hope this response goes through, but this is ffrotell.

What you described is exactly what I’m looking for and had with a previous app. They had a sort option “newest to oldest by podcast” and then a priority list for the podcast order in the playlist. Podcast priority list would be Podcast C, Podcast A, Podcast D. When I opened the playlist all of Podcast C (newest to oldest) would be listed first; then Podcast A newest to oldest; etc. Obviously, sort could also be “oldest to newest by podcast”. Combined with smartlist, I can select a sequence of daily news podcast from the last 24 hours and order them in the sequence I would like for my morning commute and then a different list for my evening commute. For example, in the morning I would like to listen podcast in this order: (NPR Up First, Markplace.org Morning Report (multiple releases), BBC Global News Podcast, NYT Daily). Instead, I go to the playlist and pick the sequence manually.

With this a approach it would also be nice to have an option where after any podcast finishes, the next one played is from the top of the list rather then continuing with the next in the sequence. This will account for a high priority podcast being released while listening to a lower priority podcast. Instead of continuing with the low priority ones, the higher one now has precedence.

    Thank you.

  • Hi there, @francisca539df6f6! Thanks for providing more details about the preferred podcast order. I’ve added your vote to a feature request we have regarding custom sort orders. Thanks for your input on this!

What I am missing in the new playlist feature, which I have been eagerly waiting for, is manual sorting. The same drag sorting like in “Up Next”.
Some more details on the UX I am asking for. I created 2 additional playlists:
    Work (all my professional episodes)
Leisure (all my fun & education episodes)
I want these playlists to behave exactly as if they were:
    – Up Next Work
    – Up Next Leisure
Meaning, I can order them by dragging, and the episodes are removed from the playlist when they are ‘played’ (this one I was able to set with your Smart Rules).
This way I have the same listening experience on my work & on my leisure episodes.

Let me know of any clarifications needed.
Good job on the playlists feature (you’re almost there :-) )

  • @ilanneeman thank you for sharing your thoughts on this! I’ve added your comment to our internal feature request so our team can take it into consideration as we review potential features for development.
