Pocket Casts “hijacks” playing of WAV files

I get my home voicemail messages in the Gmail app as .wav files. When I click one to listen to it, Pocket Casts “hijacks” the file, shows it in the “Add file” screen, but doesn’t even let me play it.

How can I disassociate the .wav filetype to not play in Pocket Casts?

  • Hi there! In this case, you will need to check your device settings. For example, if you have an Android device you can can go to Settings > Apps. Select an app then go to Open by default. If available, select Clear defaults to remove default settings.
Then, next time you download a file from Gmail you should be able to choose the app to download the file. You can choose the option to download with an app only once or always. I hope this helps point you in the right direction!

I did Google for the answer and found similar to what you’re telling me, but I cannot get it to work. When I went to Settings > Apps > Open by Default > Pocket Casts, I only get the options to “Chooser how to open web links for this app” and there are various forms of pocketcasts.com listsed. But I want to disassociate a file type, e.g. .WAV.

    Please advise.

No matter what I do, it always opens in Pocket Casts “Add file” screen.

  • @reblazer This is no longer a Pocket Casts-specific issue. It’s an OS issue. What likely happened was, when you opened a WAV file before, you selected the option to always use Pocket Casts with WAV files.

In any case, the steps you followed are a bit different from what Eleanor shared earlier. Again, can you try Settings > Apps > Pocket Casts > Clear defaults > Clear?

I just tested that for you after setting Pocket Casts as the default app for playing WAV files on my phone, and Clear defaults cleared the file association. Let us know if it works for you!

I’m running Android 15 and don’t have those same options. This is what I see. I don’t see an option to clear anything.

  • @reblazer Hmm, there may be some customizations to those menus made by your device’s manufacturer. Could you let us know what device you’re using?

Also, what application would you like the .wav files to open in? That may help us find the correct steps to accomplish this.

I’m using a Google Pixel 9 running Android 15. I don’t really care what plays these .wav files, as long as it’s super simple. My goal is to click the file and it instantly plays.

I’d imagine there’s some built in .wav player, but in an effort to get this issue working, I downloaded Simple Music Player. Like I said, though, whatever works is just fine by me.

  • @reblazer another option would be to open up your File Manager app, and then use the ‘Open With’ option to select the app you want to use. That might allow you to save the selection: https://d.pr/v/qcSeR7

Yep, I’ve tried that. (Many times. :) It doesn’t remember the selection.

And I already tried what Google Support suggests, but I don’t have the option in Step #5: “Turn off Open supported links”

So, this is embarrassing. I realized the problem was specific to the audio player I was using. It just didn’t pop up as a default .WAV player. 🤦🏻‍♂️ My apologies for taking all of your time, but thank you all for your efforts to help!

  • @reblazer Thanks for the update! No need to apologize, we’re always happy to help if we can. I’m glad you found a solution for this. 😊
