Pocketcasts will not unpause with airpod double tap

I am using Pocket Casts app version 7.36.0.3 on an iPhone 12 running iOS 16.4.1 and 1st gen airpods.

Often when listening to podcasts I will use the double tap gesture on my airpods to pause/unpause playback. Pausing always works with pocket casts but unpausing only works if done shortly after pausing. If I wait sometimes as short as 30 seconds, double tapping an airpod will do nothing.

This problem does not happen with other apps such as Apple podcasts, Spotify, YouTube music, etc.

Has anyone had this problem? Rebooting the phone, disconnecting and reconnecting the airpods, updating iOS and apps does not seem to make a difference.

  • Hi @dsj2086 👋

I couldn’t reproduce the issue with my 1st Gen AirPods Pro, though its Play/Pause gesture differs from AirPods.

When did you start noticing the issue? Did it start happening after an OS or Pocket Casts app update?

Your AirPods also allow you to customize the double-tap action. If you haven’t done so, please try changing it to another action and change it back to Play/Pause to see if it helps.

I have been experiencing a similar issue — when listening to podcasts downloaded to my apple watch, if I pause the episode and wait more than a minute or two to unpause, it will not resume — either on my watch or, if I have it with me, my iphone. I have to restart both devices, and *sometimes* it will play again; sometimes I have to delete the app, restart, reinstall the app, and then play (but the pause problem will recurs the next time I pause playing). I just started using Pocket Casts, and all OS seem to be up to date (first gen airpods, iPhone 12 mini, 1st gen apple watch SE). Is there a setting I need to change?

  • Hi @kshimakawa

I wasn’t able to reproduce this issue. Could you share a bit more details?

    • Does it happen with any podcast?
    • I noticed that you mentioned this issue occurs with downloaded podcasts. Does this problem also happen when streaming (not downloading) the episode?

It happens with all the podcasts I’ve tried (all downloaded — I don’t have cellular service on the watch so I can’t stream from it). The weird thing is, it happened when I happened to have both the watch and the phone, and once it froze on the watch, it was frozen on my phone too (at the same point in the episode). It kind of seems like it’s not able to talk to my airpods (though bluetooth says they’re connected), and so after it *looks* like it’s going to play (the icon goes from “play” to “pause”), after a few seconds it gives up and the icon goes back to “play.”

  • Hi @kshimakawa

From what you’ve described, it sounds like playback is stalling after a pause when using downloaded episodes on your Apple Watch, and that this issue sometimes affects playback on your iPhone as well.

To help us investigate further, could you please share the following?

    • The version of Pocket Casts you currently have installed
    • The OS version of your iPhone and Apple Watch

Also, just to confirm: does playback resume as expected if you use wired headphones (or no headphones) with the iPhone? That will help us determine whether this is an AirPods-specific issue or something broader.

pocket casts OS 7.90.0.5, iPhone OS 18.5, Apple Watch OS 10.6.1

it’s a good question (re playback w/o airpods); I think it *can* play through phone speakers when this happens (I don’t have wired headphones)

  • @kshimakawa thanks for the feedback on this. If you can test that out when it happens again, it will be really helpful, since I also cannot seem to replicate the issue on my end.

OK, I finally got it to happen again. When it freezes (via airpods), it *does* play through the phone. The phone *looks* like it’s connected to the airpods (in settings), but when I look at airplay (while trying to play episode), initially the airpods show up, then the airpods disappear from airplay list and it goes to phone (and then if I hit play it’ll come through phone speaker)

  • Thanks for following up and sharing those additional details, @ks1472!

Try resetting your AirPods (instructions from Apple here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT209463). That might help clear any Bluetooth pairing issues.
