Podcast priorities

I’d love to get the ability to prioritize my podcasts. This could be a per-podcast priority, a filter setting where filter 1 gets priority over filter 2 which gets priority over filter 3,4,5, etc.

The purpose of this is to have one set of podcasts that are always first to play. Let’s call them podcasts that you’ll hear the day they come out.

If those are all heard, then the next set of podcasts will get played (although they’ll get preempted if new podcasts get posted in the first set). Let’s call them podcasts you’ll hear within a few days of them coming out.

The next set might be for podcasts that you want to keep up with, but you don’t care how quickly you get to them, since they’ll be preempted by the first two sets of podcasts.

There might even be another set or two of decreasing priority, one might be to catch up on back issues of a podcast that you only want to get to if all of the ones you’re keeping up with are done.

There are a few podcast players with decent priority systems, Downcast is one of the best, but the overall experience with Pocket Casts is better, so I’d love to have the feature here.

  • Hi, @rick64f073e9d08! Thanks for suggesting this. I’ve made sure to file it in our internal list of feature requests.

In the meantime, if you use any Auto Add to Up Next settings for your podcasts, you can try using the “To Top” Auto Add to Up Next position for the ones you wish to prioritize. You can check this under Profile > Settings (gear icon) > Auto Add to Up Next. You can then use “To Bottom” for other podcasts.

+1. I use auto add to up next, but I can’t set any to add to bottom because I always have ton of older episodes I’m listening to in the queue. My variant of this request would be set priority for auto add to up next. For instance, I like to listen to the latest episode of a short daily podcast, then audio dramas, then news, then others.

  • @kapods22 thank you! I’ve added your comments to the feature request as well!

I know it has been awhile since this thread has been updated, but I would like to advocate for a feature like this as well. My use case would look like:

Group1: Podcasts that I always want to hear as soon as possible after they come out/are downloaded – I would add any new episodes of podcasts in the group as Play Last inside that group

Group2: Podcasts that are second priority, but that I still want to hear each week. Add episodes to this group as Play Last inside the group

Group3: Backlog of stuff I want to hear if I clear out the other two lists, often specific older episodes that I have manually selected because they seem interesting.

Any available Group1 episode would always play next. Any Group2 episode would play once the Group1 queue is clear. If both queues have cleared, play the first available episode of Group3. I actually would be happy if Group1 and Group2 podcasts interrupted Group3 episodes, even if not completed.

  • Hi, @dwolgast! Thanks for that detailed description, we appreciate it! I’ve added your feedback to the feature request related to improving playback. While I know it’s not exactly the same thing as you’re describing, I encourage you to checkout the Smart Playlists and manual playlist options. (Please update to version 8.0 to see the new playlists features.) You can add specific podcasts to a Smart Playlist, then sort them by Oldest to Newest. And, you can create a playlist where you add specific episodes manually.
