Problems downloading episodes on iOS app?

I’ve been using Pocket Casts on Android for a while, so I was exceedingly glad to learn that it also exists for iOS when I switched phone platforms recently.
However, I’m constantly having issues with episodes of podcasts that I’m subscribed to not downloading properly, or at all.
What seems to happen is that Pocket Casts doesn’t attempt to begin downloading until I manually launch the app. That’s usually when I get in my car, ready to leave for work. It downloads the first couple of minutes while it can still hit the house WiFi and then as I pull away and it should be switching over to Cellular it kills the download but somehow leaves the episode in some thoroughly busted state.
Sometimes I can fix it by manually saying to remove the download and then telling it to play the episode and “OK”ing the warning that I’m on mobile data (even though I thought I’d told it to be alright with that). But that only works sometimes. Sometimes it doesn’t think there’s a download to remove, but also won’t continue the download.
When this happens it plays the first however much (a minute or two) of the episode that it got and then just gets stuck and starts flailing around trying to continue.
Is there a way to fix this? I thought I might be able to just tell iOS to allow the app to run in the background so it would download the episodes fully overnight but I can’t find any such option.
