Problems with two RSS feeds

Hello, I am a great user of Pocketcasts. I have problems updating two podcasts in your app.

    1. The URL of the feed is this https://www.ara.cat/podcasts/avui-a-l-ara/podcast.xml

It has not been updated for days, and new episodes have come out. The podcast has changed its name: it is no longer called ‘Una història al dia’, but now is ‘Un dia a l’ara’.

    2. With this other feed https://www.ondacero.es/rss/3737712.xml the episodes are downloaded but when it comes to playing them there is an error. With other players, such as Apple Podcats, there are no problems.

  • Hello there!

The URL of the feed is this https://www.ara.cat/podcasts/avui-a-l-ara/podcast.xml

It looks like this feed has since been updated. The most recent episode listed in the feed and shown in Pocket Casts is titled “Sergio Busquets, l’estrella discreta. Amb Antoni Bassas i Albert Nadal”

With this other feed https://www.ondacero.es/rss/3737712.xml the episodes are downloaded but when it comes to playing them there is an error. With other players, such as Apple Podcats, there are no problems.

Testing this on my end, I’m able to play the most recent episodes in the feed without error on my iPhone. Are you still having trouble getting these to play? If so, could you let us know what device you’re using, what operating system version it’s running, and what version of Pocket Casts is installed?

Yes, I’m still having problems. I have an iPhone 11 on the latest version of iOS (16.4.1) and Pocket casts (7.37). Thanks!

    Here’s a screenshot

  • @febrers, it looks like your screenshot might have failed to upload. Would you be able to post that again?

    Sorry, This is the screenshot

  • I was able to recreate the error on our end. It looks like the file itself is corrupted. We use iOS’ built-in audio engine for playback and that system gave us the following error when trying to play the episode:

    com.apple.coreaudio.avfaudio error 1685348671

I would recommend reaching out to the podcast creator and sharing that error message with them. They can use that information to make adjustments to their audio transcoding process to prevent the error from occurring going forward.

Hello. This is quite strange because I can play this podcast in the Apple Podcasts app without any problem.

  • Hi, @febrers! It looks like the issue in Pocket Casts only happens if the episode is downloaded, as shown by the green checkmark in your screenshot. When I stream the episode on iOS, it works fine.

Can you please remove the downloaded file by clicking on the green checkmark? Then, please let us know if you’re able to stream just fine so we can narrow down the cause of the issue.

In addition, in Apple Podcasts, are you only streaming the episode? Or is the episode downloaded as well?

    Hello, thanks for the answer.

When I try to stream an episode, it stops playing after a few seconds or a minute, it stops. I get this error: ‘Playback failed. Check your Internet connection and try again’.

In contrast, in Apple Podcasts the episode plays correctly, whether it was downloaded or streamed.

This problem not only occurs in this podcast, but in all those of the Onda Cero radio station, the third in Spain.

  • @febrers Apple may be using a slightly different or newer version of the system’s built-in audio playback engine, which isn’t yet available to third-party developers. This would be the reason for the differences in playback compatibility.

Since Pocket Casts uses the playback engine made available by Apple, though, there isn’t much we can do to resolve the issue without Apple making updates to the system.

I would recommend reaching out to the podcast creator to let them know of the playback error — here is the error the system is sending us:

    com.apple.coreaudio.avfaudio error 1685348671

Many other podcast apps on iOS use this same playback system, so this error is likely to occur on other third-party podcast apps as well. So the podcast creator would want to review the error and make adjustments to their audio encoding system to prevent them going forward.
