Queue auto sorting or Multiple queues?

I listen to a lot of podcasts, but there’s a couple that I’d like to make sure that I hear first if there’s episodes available. The others are nice to have for times when I run out of my high priority ones. The order in which episodes are played does matter. I have it set to queue new episodes automatically. It adds them to the bottom of the queue though, so I need to manually move them up. If I change the position to “play next” then they will be sorted in the queue in reverse order, because the new ones are always added to the top. I’d like to be able to set it to “play next”, but after all other episodes from the same podcast.

Another way to do what I want is to have multiple queues and have the ability to choose which queue episodes get added to. Then I could order the queues the way I’d like.

  • Hi, @joelmackenzie78d8ef5ce1! With the current features of the app, the closest thing to get what you want is really by using “play next” (for high-priority podcasts) and “play last” (for others). I know that’s still pretty limited though, so I’ve filed both of the feature requests you mentioned.

    +1 for this request.

I mentally categorize my podcasts into Daily, Weekly, Occasional, and Backlog. I typically try to clear our my Daily podcasts then move on to Weekly and Occasional podcasts. Then if I finish those, I’d move on to my backlog. At one point, my Up Next queue was 50 hours deep, but it was because of the backlog podcasts that I wanted to get to eventually and only 8-10 hours of the Daily/Weekly podcasts.

I would love to have a queue for each group of podcasts and the ability to select the playlist I want to listen to at the time.

  • Thanks @adameaglevt – I’ve added your vote for this to our internal feature request.

+1 for something like this request.

My use case is simpler than adameaglevt‘s, but it might point the way to some kind of generic solution to everyone’s needs.

I like to fill my queue (manually) with a hand-picked list of episodes that I want to listen to in the coming however-long-it-takes-to-get-through-the-list. I then have episodes that are more ‘urgent’ to listen to (news etc.) which I then add to the top of the queue whenever they pop up. The need to manually re-order these if there is more than one stops me from using the auto-queuing capabilities. If these would be added to the top of the queue but below all other episodes from these podcasts, I could let this queuing happen automatically.

I personally use filters in the mobile app to put podcasts in these ‘urgent’ categories. Perhaps a priority on the filters or podcasts could guide where in the queue an episode was added. For my own use case a much simpler third queuing option would suffice, where I’d have 1. add to bottom, 2. add to top, 3. add to top below all others previously added to top. But combined with a kind of priority that could easily extend method 2 and 3 to 4. add to top but below higher priority podcasts, 5. add to top but below all episodes of same priority.

  • Hi there, @arnvidr! I’ve added your vote to the feature to assign episodes by filters and by priorities. We appreciate your feedback for making the app better!

I’m bad about listening intermittently so I have to go through weeks or even months of podcasts on various channels and pick that I’m gonna listen to.

I would love the ability to tap a sort button on my “Up Next” que and have it sort by date. But still be able to prioritize the specific podcasts that I want. Self sort, then custom sort on top…. If it could be like the other commenter said and sort by date, then custom added, and have any further added just self sort by date below the chosen ones…. That would be amazing.

    thanks!

  • @bbarakti Thanks for chiming in! I’ve added your comments to our feature request report.

I think for me the ideal implementation for me would be to have the up next list not be episode based, but podcast based. Or more likely a whole separate playback mode, “auto queue” or something like that. I would then like to be able to rank podcasts into several (a user-selectable amount?) priority levels. The “auto-queue” is populated first with the highest priority podcast with unlistened and unarchived episodes available. I’d imagine settings to handle order of podcasts with the same priority level, including alternating vs. multiple episodes of the same podcasts in a row.

Then set per podcast to “prefer newer episodes first” (for current events podcasts) or “prefer oldest unlistened first” (for episodic ones) for the auto-add to the queue*. Archived status would still be taken into account to, for instance, discard old episodes of current event podcasts automatically via the customised archiving settings.

    * = Perhaps even a hybrid “I just discovered a new podcast”-mode when the internal sorting is “latest first, then chronological” so you can keep up with the new, while (slowly) working through the backlog.

  • @renaigu thank you for sharing your thoughts about how you’d like to see something like this implemented. I’ve forwarded this along to our team for consideration.

i would love to have any of the more advanced playback tools described in the previous comments – i spend a lot of time managing what i’m listening to and these kinds of options would be fantastic for cutting down on the manual reordering i do several times a day. i’d also love to be informed if this exists somewhere and i’m just unaware 🙏🏻

  • Thanks for your feedback, @wulf0491

    It has been noted :)

  • I’ve added a +1 on your behalf, @reblazer!

+1 how a podcast application did not have this feature?

  • Hi, @marcotonoli1969! Thank you for your feedback. I’ve added your vote to the feature request too.

I think my need is what is being requested here. I would like to have multiple groups of podcast episodes. e.g. I might have a favourite podcast episode group. Another being weekly whats new etc etc. Then I just want to be able to switch between them.

  • @phodge25 Thanks for your feedback. I’ve added it to our thread.
