Skip and rewind with headphone controls

This is exactly my problem on the latest version and on Google Pixel 7 Pro.
No matter how I change the settings under Headphone control, it doesn’t work. I tried with multiple wired headphones.

Can you tell us what version of the app you are using?
Also, please let us know the following:
- Do you perhaps have a firewall, VPN, or ad-blocker active on your device that could interrupt your network connection?
- Please also check your primary WiFi connection. In particular, please see if it has any sort of ad-blocking or filtering installed on it. One example would be this: https://pi-hole.net/

I have the same issue.
I am using a Pixel 8 phone running the latest version of Android 14. I am running Pocket Casts version 7.67-rc-2 (9247). I am using Google Pixel USB-C earbuds.
What works: Pressing the center button ONCE correctly pauses and plays the podcast.
What does not work: Pressing the center button TWICE does not skip ahead 30 seconds and pressing the center button THREE times does not go back.
On other apps (e.g. YouTube music, double press and triple press of the center button work correctly so the problem appears to be how Pocket Casts interprets double press and triple press of the center button.
When using wireless earbuds (e.,g. Bose QC Earbuds Ultra) the double press and triple press work OK with Pocket Casts. The problem is only when using Pocket Casts with wired headphones.
Network connectivity is not relevant in my situation. The problem occurs with downloaded podcasts . The problems also occurs on 5G and on wifi and also occurs when in airplane mode. I do not use any ad-blocking applications or VPNs.

@89iqsyxm0 I recommend the settings you have in Pocket Casts at Settings> Headphone controls. Our app does allow you to set custom controls that are unique to our app, which may be why things are working differently here as opposed to in places like YouTube music. Let us know if adjusting things there helps or doesn’t seem to improve your situation. We’re happy to continue to assist until it’s right

I am experiencing the same problem with USB-C connected wired earbuds. The single button-press for play/pause works fine, however the double-press to skip forward and triple-press to skip back does not work. the single, double, and triple-press capabilities work just fine in Spotify or Google Music. Going into the settings-> Headphone Controls presents the means of selecting what is configured for Previous Action (skip back) and Next Action (skip forward) but changing these settings makes no difference in operation.
This wired remote behaviour is the same on my Google Pixel 8 and Lenovo Tab9 tablet and using Sony MDREX110APB earbuds.
Bluetooth connected headphones work just fine for remote actions in Pocketcasts.

Further to the information above, I am connecting my Sony MDREX110APB earbuds to my phone or tablet using a 3.5mm to USB-C adapter. The brand and type of 3.5mm to USB-C adapter bears on PocketCasts’ “double-press to skip forward” and triple-press to skip back” capability.’Further to the information above, I am connecting my Sony MDREX110APB earbuds to my phone or tablet using a 3.5mm to USB-C adapter. there is one adapter I tested where the “double-press to skip forward” and triple-press to skip back” capability works:
- Apple USB-C to 3.5mm adapter – single-press to pause: works. Double and triple-press actions: do not work.
- Google USB-C to 3.5mm adapter – single-press to pause: works. Double and triple-press actions: do not work.
- Logiix model LGX-12852 USB-C to 3.5mm adapter – single-press to pause: works. Double and triple-press actions: WORK.

Thanks for the extensive testing, @scott8625920931! I’ve shared your findings with the developers, and we’ll let you know as soon as we find out more.
-
@scott8625920931 According to our developers, the issue seems to be from a hardware limitation, so it’s unfortunately not something that can be addressed from the app’s side.
-
Does the conclusion that this is a hardware limitation still stand? Even though it works on other apps? It’s such a basic feature, the app is somewhat unusable without it.
-
Just confirmed that this works on Podcast Republic, which also allows controls to be configured (with more granularity, actually). So I don’t see how this can be a hardware thing.
-
@staff-cara, I would be interested to hear what hardware the team tested or even if they tested any hardware (and not just going on what Scott wrote).
Is there a list of known good hardware that works with Pocket Casts?
-
Even if this is a hardware issue, the fact that Podcast Republic have found a solution, proves that this alleged hardware issue is not insurmountable.
-
@sivanbhaim and @89iqsyxm0 could you confirm what settings you have configured in Profile > Settings > Headphone controls?
Also, sivanbhaim, could you let us know what headphone’s you’re using where this feature isn’t working as expected?
-
Sure:
- Previous action: Skip back
- Next action: Skip forward
I’m using Panasonic ErgoFit wired earbuds. I double click their built-in play/pause button, which I expect to skip 30s forward (like it did on my iphone) but on my Pixel 9 it does nothing.
In case that’s useful – when I have my Bluetooth JBL Clip speaker connected, double clicking its play/pause button does skip forward as expected.

Hi guys,
Just to let you all know, I have been experiencing this problem since earlier this year.
The good news: I have submitted a fix tested on wired headphones, and will most likely be user-facing in the 7.80 release.
Here is the fix if you are interested https://github.com/Automattic/pocket-casts-android/pull/3297
Happy Christmas!

Thanks for the contribution, @reviewdarkcfc589d9ad! We’re also adding extra logging to version 7.80 to help troubleshoot issues like this.
