Sleep Timer does notrestart after shaking the device

  • Unknown's avatar

    Android version: 12
    OS version: 4.14.113-25257816
    PocketCasts version: 7.80-rc1 (9301)
    Device: Samsung Galaxy S10e

According to the documentation and my settings for the Sleep timer, shaking the device should restart the sleep timer and playback should continue.

But this does not work on my phone. Volume is slowly silencing and playback finally stopps when timer is down to zero as expected, but shaking device, more or less immediately, does not restart the timer.

I don’t know which sensors are used exactly by PocketCasts to detect the motion, but motion sensors oft he device seem to work, according to the results oft the Samsung device self test and to the result oft a test app (Acceleration is showing values if device is shaked).

What could be wrong here? I really like this feature.

    Any advice welcome!
    Thanks, Matthias

  • Hi Matthias,

Thank you for providing such detailed information about your device and the issue you’re experiencing—it’s incredibly helpful!

Since you’re using the beta version (7.80-rc1), I wanted to let you know that the stable version (7.80) includes a fix for issues related to the sleep timer. Could you please try running the latest stable version?

Version is now 7.81-rc1. Seems that I’m on a beta feed for some reason.
I did a standard app update via the Android app store.

However, since this version is higher than the requested 7.80, it should include all the fixes of the stable version, shouldn’t it?
In order to investigate the problem a bit further I installed PocketCasts on a second device. It’s a Samsung tablet with a slightly older Android version. PocketCasts version is the same. Same behaviour. shaking the device does not restart timer. :-(

      Regards, Matthias

    2. @dbham07 Just to be completely sure, can you please confirm that “Shake to restart Sleep Timer” is enabled for you under Profile > Settings (gear icon) > General? You’ll know it’s enabled if the toggle is blue.

    3. In addition, which Sleep Timer setting are you using? Is it “x minutes,” “in x chapter,” or “in x episode”?

I checked it again. Yes it is switched on on both devices.

My sleep timer setting is defined as “x minutes in episode”.

    5. Hi @dbham07 – I think this is a misunderstanding of how the shake to restart feature works.

To clarify, shake to restart the timer only works BEFORE the timer has ended, so for example if you set a 10 minute timer, and you know the timer is nearly done but you want to listen for longer, you can shake the phone to restart the timer at 10 minutes again.

If you want to restart the timer AFTER it has finished, you can enable “Auto Restart Sleep Timer” and then if you press play within 5 minutes after the timer has finished, it will restart the timer again.

      Hope that helps!

Hi, this indeed is a misunderstanding. And yes I just tested it, the timer is restarted when I shake the device before the timer has ended. So it works as designed.

However, in my opinion, my use case (restarting timer and continue playing AFTER timer has ended) would be the more natural behavior.

When do people use this functionality? If they are going to sleep. So if you are not asleep already, would you like to need to shake the phone every five minutes or so in order to let it play until you sleep? Wouldn’t it be more convinient to let it play until it goes off and if you are awake enough to realize it, one shake of the phone (within a defined time period) is enought to restart it? I know this

Restarting the timer by hitting the play button is not a suitable alternative, because it requires to wake up the phone and to open at least one eye to locate the play button. In my opinion there is to much activity needed in a situation where the goal is, to fell asleep.

May be my version of the sleep timer restart is an option for a future release.

      Thanks, Matthias

    7. @dbham07 that is some great feedback, Matthias!

It has been added to our ideas board, and I think this improvement will certainly make the app better. If more users would like this adjusted too, please comment below so we can log your feedback

      Hi!

Not sure what I can add as an additional comment here. In my posting before I explained already why I think, that “my way” of restarting the timer could be beneficial for all users of the pocket casts player.

Instead of, or in additition to the current way of restarting, I would suggest to implement it like this:
Wait until the timer is down to zero. If it is, wait fo a fixed (or configurable) amount of time whether the listener is shaking the device or not. If he does, restart the timer and continue playing the actual podcast or list of podcasts.
Another feature which would be nice in this context: When you start playing a podcast in a configurable time window, lets say between 10 PM and 6 AM, then the sleep timer is automatically startet. But this is just a “nice to have” feature. ;-)
To go back a few seconds in the podcast if the replay is restarting would be nice, so that it is easier to follow the content. This optional feature is implemented already in the current version of the app and should also apply in this situation.

      Regards,
      Matthias

    9. Hi Matthias,

Thanks again for your detailed feedback and suggestions! Just wanted to confirm that we added your suggestion to the ideas board. We appreciate you taking the time to explain your suggested implementation so thoroughly. We’ll keep all of this in mind as we consider future improvements to the sleep timer.
