Any plans for Pocket Cast to support .m3u8 ?

  • Hi there. .m3u8 should already be supported in our iOS and Android apps. If you’re having trouble, can you provide more details about what exactly you’re trying to do, and where you’re running into issues?

    ps : using PocketCast Jan 31 2025 on S25 Android UI 7

  • @maximegousse We’ve tested the episode you linked on a similar device (Galaxy S23) and were able to play it without issues. Since it seems to be an isolated issue, could you try these steps:

    1. Force close and restart the Pocket Casts app.
    2. Restart your S25.
    3. Check your network connection.

OK, I think I am getting close to finding the issue. This podcast is part of a playlist (a filter), and both the filter and the podcast series are set as auto-download. When the episode is downloaded, Pocket can no longer play it; it can only stream it. However, I often listen to my podcasts in the car, and, like many of us, I have set Pocket to not download over LTE. See error message … in French. Merci.

  • Hi @maximegousse – Thanks for the details. We’re still having trouble reproducing the issue though, even with episodes auto-downloaded as part of a filter. Are you able to provide step by step instructions we can take to reproduce the error?

Try manually downloading the episode and then playing it. It will not work.

  • @maximegousse Thank you! I’m able to replicate the error based on the steps you provided. We’ll continue looking into this, and we’ll keep you updated with what we find.

  • @maximegousse We’re including a fix for this issue with version 7.85, so please keep an eye out for when that becomes available for your device.

For context, the podcast’s episodes are very short and compressed really well, so they were only hundreds of bytes. Our app currently wrongly assumes that files that are that small aren’t valid episodes. Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

  • @maximegousse Apologies here! It turns out that the issue with the Radiojournal podcast is way more complex than we first thought. m3u8 files are essentially text-based playlists that reference various audio or video files.

So, when the app downloads the m3u8, it only gets the playlist. It then looks for the referenced files in your device’s local storage, and we don’t see a way around this yet.

As a workaround for now, you can remove the downloaded file for the episode so that you’re only streaming it. When you open the episode’s details, you should see a green checkmark that signifies the episode has been downloaded. Please tap the green checkmark, then tap “Remove.”

I’ve also opened a feature request on your behalf for m3u8 support so we can track demand for it.

tks for looking that up. I am glkad (sort of) that I found abug for you. Yes, it does work when I do NOT download the episode and simply stream it.

  • Great to hear that streaming the episode is working for you, @maximegousse! It sounds like you’re all set, so I’ll mark this thread as resolved. However, if you encounter any further issues or have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to reopen this thread.
