Up Next and Auto Downloads Have Disappeared on iPhone and Apple Watch

I use Pocket Casts on my iPhone and Apple Watch. All has been working well. Today I noticed that Up Next is suddenly empty and auto-download is unchecked on all my many podcasts for which it had been checked. There have been no unusual events on my iPhone, so I don’t know what happened. Shouldn’t all that be saved in in Pocket Casts sync? Any ideas as to what may have happened? More importantly, how do I restore all this without having to recreate it manually? Thank you.

  • @tenaciousdeliciously7f7d8c5119 we are investigating an issue like this that affects Apple Watch. Can you confirm your WatchOS version and Pocket Casts version?

You should be able to restore this via Profile > Settings > Up Next History. More information here: https://support.pocketcasts.com/knowledge-base/folder-and-up-next-sync-conflicts/

Pocket Casts version 7.75, Watch OS version 11.1. However, this also affected the iPhone which is running iOS 18.1. I have a theory. Tell me if this makes sense. I subscribe to a number of podcasts that are mostly professional journals. My goal for up next is to have episodes queued by publication date not by journal. I had all of these set to auto-add to up next and had the limit set to 100 and over 100 set to stop. My assumption, which in retrospect may be wrong (which is my question for you) is that once I reached 100, every time I listed to one and got to 99, the next one in line would be added. Is that wrong? If so, would that explain it somehow? Anyway, I have now set the limit to 500 and set behavior at limit to “only add to top.” By the way, I don’t understand what “add to top” means. Does that mean that if I hit 500, the next one I hear will be the most recent one? That’s not really what I want.

At this point, I manually added all the episodes (articles) I haven’t heard yet, and then had to manually sequence them by date (which was painful). Is there a better way to have done this? There are now 103 episodes in up next. I’m hoping not to have to manually do all this again. Is the up next list I have now saved so that I can go back to it if this happens again?

    Thank you.

@tenaciousdeliciously7f7d8c5119 Since you have your Auto Add to Up Next settings set to stop adding new episodes once the limit is reached, a new episode will only be automatically added to the queue once some space opens up, like when you listen to one episode and the queue goes down to 99. None of the Auto Add to Up Next settings should completely clear your Up Next queue, however. So, I’ll be emailing you to collect more information to help us investigate.

By the way, I don’t understand what “add to top” means. Does that mean that if I hit 500, the next one I hear will be the most recent one?

“Add to Top” only signifies that any episode automatically added to your queue will be added to the top of the queue. It isn’t affected by the Auto Add Limit.

At this point, I manually added all the episodes (articles) I haven’t heard yet, and then had to manually sequence them by date (which was painful). Is there a better way to have done this?

There isn’t a way to sort by date right now, but I made sure to file a feature request for this on your behalf.

The steps we shared earlier should help you restore the Up Next queue. You can go to Profile > Settings > Up Next History to restore a previous version of your Up Next queue. More information can be found here: https://support.pocketcasts.com/knowledge-base/folder-and-up-next-sync-conflicts/

Thank you for all this. Your response confirms that the app is not behaving as expected. I will send the info requested. I’m still not clear on “add to top”. Is that the same as “play next” or “play last”? I would think it should be play last, since that episode is being added after all the others. At least, that’s what I would want. Thank you.

  • Hi again, @tenaciousdeliciously7f7d8c5119

Perfect. I just saw your email now and will be getting back to you shortly :)

The best thing to compare it would be ‘play next’, as it will automatically add those episodes straight to the top of your Up Next queue. However, if you had to use ‘Play Next’ along with this feature, it will place those episodes after the episodes set to ‘play next’.

The ‘Play Last’ option will result in episodes being placed at the end of your queue, so episodes added to the top will be played before those set to play last.

I’ll go ahead and close this ticket so we can continue our discussion via the ticket :)
