“Up next” doesn’t sync to new phone

  • Unknown's avatar

The “Up Next” queue just stays empty on the new phone.

    • both phones are logged into the same account
    • both phones have recently synched
    • old phone has a huge list, new phone has empty list
    • pocket casts web player has the correct queue synched with old phone
    • both phones are android and on version 7.91 of pocket casts
    • I have tried reinstalling, deleting the data, logging in and out, etc. I’m at a loss
    • In some constellation I managed that the empty list from the new phone is synched to the old phone, but thankfully I could locally recover it.

I still hope this can be fixed properly, but my temporary workaround for IT nerds:

    • go to the pocket casts web player, open browser network debugging
    • Look for calls to the API with “list” — one should contain an array exactly the size of your up next list, copy that to a file
    • Unfortunately that list only contains podcast IDs (but at least readable episode titles), but for the titles there is another “list” call that should contain a list of your podcasts; if you copy that to a file, you can correlate the episode with a podcast name

If you feel extra fancy, you can have an LLM (I used Claude 3.7 Sonnet) write a python script that correlates the IDs and outputs the data in a neat CSV file ready for Excel.

I just noticed that when I add new episodes to “up next” on the new phone, these episodes get added to the “up next” list on the old phone. It kind of seems that the sync is done per item and not completely? Can I somehow trigger a complete sync?

  • Hi there, @luminousloudly56a6ba9398! Thank you for sharing your troubleshooting steps. Just to make sure I understand the issue here – You have two Android devices using the app and would like to have the same list of episodes in Up Next on both devices. However, you’ve noticed that only one episode at a time is added to the Up Next queue. So the lists won’t match. Is that right?
Were you able to test restoring from local history as mentioned in this guide?
Also, have you noticed if other items are not synced, such as archived episodes?

Yes, I have two android devices and I would like the same list of “Up Next” on both.

Yes, only one (new) episode is synched between devices, the list is otherwise empty on the new device. The lists do not match.

I have restored from local history on both the old and the new device. On the old device, the backup has the right amount of episodes (~200). On the new device, the backup has the wrong number of episodes (1 or 2).

Yes, archived episodes do not seem to sync either, most of my podcasts show a lot of unplayed episodes now. I don’t really use that feature.

However, the play position of the current episode does sync between devices.

Anyway, there’s nothing to do for me specifically now, I’ve reset the old device. As described above, I have saved the old list as Excel file…

  • Hi @luminousloudly56a6ba9398

Thanks for sharing more information. Did the guide was of any help?

    Hi,

No, sorry, I followed the steps in the guide and it did not help. Maybe I did something wrong.

  • @luminousloudly56a6ba9398 Could you list down the steps you took to check if it’s correct?

  • Unknown's avatar
    1. I opened Pocket Casts on both phones
    2. I made sure I’m logged in with the pocket casts app on both phones
    3. I pressed the sync button first on the old phone (waited seconds), then on the new phone

Result: List on new phone stayed as it is (mostly empty with a couple episodes added manually).

I reset the old phone (because someone else needs it), but I can still compare the web “up next” list with my new phone.

The web list still contains 287 episodes with about 150h runtime. All episodes I added from the new phone are at the top. The rest of the list are episodes I added on the old phone.

The list on the new phone contains 7 episodes with about 7h runtime.

I have read somewhere on this forum that there might be issues with episodes added while not logged in or something, which might explain some of this behavior. But if the web player can show the whole list from the old phone, I don’t understand how the app on the new phone fails to download the same data.

I would add screenshots, but it seems I’m not allowed to add them here.

  • @luminousloudly56a6ba9398 At this point, it’s best to get app logs to check why the sync issue is happening. The web app gives the most accurate view of what we have stored for your account on our servers, so it’s curious that the phone is not getting that information. I’ll be in touch with you shortly to collect the logs.

Thanks for reaching out. I sent everything and had a look myself, and it seems there are HTTP 401 unauthorized errors when synching. I tried logging out and in again but that did not resolve the issue. Let’s see what the developers say.

  • Thanks for sharing it with us, @luminousloudly56a6ba9398
